Transfer Strategy

Grealish won't play in place of Agüero.

He'll play in place of either Foden, Gundogan or Sterling, who are all at least equal to Grealish in terms of the number of goal contributions per season. I personally don't see how Grealish will lead to us scoring more than last year because we can only play five attackers at once.

He's taken Agüero's place in the squad, which is like replacing a part-time employee with a full-time employee. So I think the squad is stronger than last season

I would also be amazed if Grealish doesn't score more than the 4 league goals Agüero managed last season

Their transfer strategy this summer has been better than ours (actually fucking buy the players you need rather than fail and stick with the same squad plus one guy you didn't need). They win less because Ole is in charge.
You'd swap our squad for theirs?

Yeah, its like eBay mate. You hit the buy it now button and nothing can change, you own Ronaldo, gets shipped over and he starts next week.

You really believe the rags only got involved this morning?

they are paying the fee, we wanted him for nothing.

your right though the transfer process is smooth and slick that’s why we’re going in to the season without a specialist striker or left back

Why? He's no great goalscorer.

Obviously hindsight but not signing Grealish and getting Kane done early with some silly bid (150M-200M) would have strenghtened the team far more.

I think the club got blindsided by following:
  • We were banking on Bernardo fee who doesn't want to be here anymore but nobody wants him
  • Thinking that Kane was willing to push more

Our handling of Messi and Ronaldo availability has also been wrong for me. Generational talents will always fit in your team, these players have delievered every single year for last 10 years with various positions, managers, tactics etc. For these players, you need to fight tooth and nail as they come along very rarely.

No, but with the current trajectories of the two squads they will likely have a better one than us in a few years. They've bought three brilliant players this summer. We've not even addressed a single hole in our squad.

I like to look at the positives.

Aguero going is sad but in reality he had no impact on what we won last year. 2 of his 4 league goals were in a game when we had wine the league.

Garcia flattered to deceive and while I see a player in him, he just struggled with the physicality. Ake is now back and we know he can easily cover Garcia’s absence.

Mendy could also be gone. Again, he didn’t do much last season and probably cost us as many points as he helped us gain in assists and goals.

The rest of the squad have had another year together. We have lots of options in midfield and that is where Pep believes games are won and lost.

Palmer and Delap could be involved more and Phil has even more experience under his belt.

We also have Grealish to help cover any absences to Dr Bruyne and Foden - which has already been the case.

Not just that, he replaces KDB as a world class creative midfielder when KDB is injured or playing false 9.

Part of our problem last year with KDB false 9 is we were left with Bernardo and Gundo in midfield, who don't really create clear cut chances in the same way.

Posted this in the Ronaldo thread but it makes more sense in here

I can see both sides to the arguments for those who wanted him and didn’t want him

unfortunately we look like complete idiots for not getting ANY striker this season when everyone else around us has improved. Many talk about how only the prem matters, but then Chelsea are now better then us. If any of the games we have lost in the past few years have shown us anything it’s that we need someone to put the ball in the net when the rest of the team is having an off day. Ronaldo could have solved that, hell messi could have as well and he was a free. It is most definitely a huge disappointment to not add either of those two when they wanted to play here. It’s not like we signed a young striker that has a lot of promise like haaland or even vlahovic. We’ve come away with no one to put the ball in the net
