Traveling to away games in the 1970s

The Scousers were the worst they would pinch your Watch as well as give you a kicking

If Elland Road was as bad as some of you are saying then it seems odd we took such large numbers yet at London grounds the support was far more sparse. I'm assuming this is simply down to distance?

I think it was determined by distance. We always took coaches and on most trips there was a "football special" train. The train was always more expensive but I preferred that, you could have a game of monopoly to take your mind off the fact there was no heating in the fooking thing. For London away trips I was lucky my brother at that time lived in Southall so I always used to go down and stop and make a weekend out of it!

Ah Chrisi nostalgia aint what it used to be ! heres one for you, as you asked for a story last night, well i have plenty but was waiting for replies to my post last night re-west ham just so any doubting Thomas`s thought I was`nt talking the dogs!!! Any lads on from Droylsden/Clayton/Openshaw who went to Leeds again in the 80`s for an FA cup game where we sold out tickets in record time (12,000) and I and most of my mates could`nt get a ticket in the city section..... Not sure how it happened but about 50 lads from Droylsden managed to get tickets for the Leeds Spion Kop end behind the goal and smack bang in the middle of `Their` end, at first about ten minutes before kick off ( ha ha ) we were sor CITYt of getting sussed out, we made our way down to the pitch side and fully expected the police to let us get to the travelling sections, they said `you got tickets for this end so your staying` but obviously by this time we were well and truly sussed, I actually said to the inspector well if thats what you want theres going to be a riot, he was having none of it. quite how it happened is a bit blurred but we turned round and looked up at about 10,000 glaring singing Leeds fans and started singing `CITY CITY CITY CITY CITY CITY` the whole ground went into an eerie silence City fans at the other end realised our plight, and Leeds fans were gobsmacked we had the balls to be in there, it only lasted a few seconds then they were on us, it was mad but crazy fun we expected it anyway, a lot of punches were traded but most of the city fans got over the barrier and legged the full length of the pitch to OUR end, some of us did`nt get that far I was one of them, would`nt could`nt swap memories like that, daft i know yeah yeah mad though and fantastic.

I remember going to leeds about 1975 with my mate from school i was about 14 going on 15 , just left the ground and was walking with the city fans next minute we was walking with leeds fans ,we had scarfs up our jumpers and was told by two leeds fans to give them our scarfs or they would soon tell the rest who we were ,we was shitting our selfs we said we were lost and did not know the way to the train station , those two leeds fans took us to the train station and took our scarfs off us, lucky or what well worth our city scarfs though . Being honest though the 70s was tough times with chants like your going home in a f*****k ambulance and your gonna get f*****g head kicked in a lot did ! exciting yes but scary as well much prefer it now with my family .

Some great stories here lads. I remember a game at Sheff Utd. Come out of the station and you could see their lads waiting outside that pub on the hill. Got a police escort to the ground, all of a sudden the Sheff lads come out from the alley and the police had gone...bastards.All i heard next were "they've got blades" that was enough for me I was off like a shot. Ran myself into a dead end car park, luckily the footsteps I heard behind me were other City fans.
Talking of Arsenal had a good mate who liked to get involved with the Gooners. They had this big black guy called Denton who was considered one of the top boys. Anyways i tagged along with my mate to Southampton away once and we were sitting in this pub when a little scrote comes up to me and said Denton wants a word with you, looked round and his crew are sitting at the bar. I was shitting myself but I went up there and had to convince him I was a gooner. He said something like "thats alright, I recognise your mate but not you just wanted to make sure".

well this thread has brought back a few memories some good some bad. in the 70's i would say rangers fans had the worst reputation so practising a glasgow accent was our way out of the usual what time is is mate question. easier for me with a dad from there but it seemed to work. when they asked the time or anything i'd just say do you know how the rangers got on pal. in jocko of course. surprising how many times it worked. didn't at middlesbrough the year they first came up tho'. that was the worst and scariest experience ever. strangely never got in any trouble at either of the liverpool grounds or o/t. leeds either. boro' and birmingham were always bad. and wolves. oh yeah and forest. and as people say often where you wouldn't expect it. oxford away in the cup was a bit hairy. and bolton once . it is a lot safer these days but sometimes the adrenalin rush was worth the fear factor of going away.

I was in there...I dont think it was the season when the Gelderd end invaded and Corrigan rugby tackled one of the Leeds nutters....maybe the season after ?...City congregated in the bottom right hand corner as you look at the pitch. Me and me pal (Fat Sharpy from Hadfield!) were only about 14 at the time. Legged it the length of the pitch...think a few of the cool cats were in there...though that could have been another season. Memmory fades. But your right we sold 12000 tickets and a number of City fans got em from Elland road. Used to travel on Maynes coaches..Denton pick up..in those days.

People are right about some city lads going over with United to Leeds.. I was with em...maybe about 1980..Gordon McQueen scored and Utd won 2-0. Ive never seen a mob like what Utd took over...about 1000 on the first train into Leeds..ransacked the Station , wrecked everything in their path. They were running riot all the way to the ground. I even remember them chasing Leeds fans into the houses on the estate by the ground. At half time people walked off with the cash tills (those big old ones..must have weighed a ton!)! I think Donald had a mob there tagging along.
