Trouble in Belfast

Estimated policing costs of £7 million so far:

Its not just policing costs...shops are struggling, restaurants are sending staff home...its ridiculous.

£7m on policing a bunch of kids wrecking the place instead of £7m policing real crime.

Im sure republicans are laughing...

What saddens me about all this is there didn't seem to be a problem with the Union Flag being above the town hall after all it is the capital of Northern Ireland which last time i looked was still part of the Union, so which loons decided not to fly it and cause this bloody mess yet again.

No there wasn't a problem...and it wasn't flown everyday anyway.

Remember its different here...its not just about flying the flag because we're part of the UK...its about flying it at appropriate times to appease both sides of the community. A very large percentage of the community don't want it flown all the time. As stated before...we all decided we'd move forward in a shared community.

Ffs its only a flag...why can't they go out and protest about important stuff that affects everyone...unemployment, taxes, declining health service, greedy banks.

No, lets destroy our country cos "they" say we can't fly a piece of cloth above the City Hall everyday. "They're" stripping us of our identity, our culture.

Feck up and get a job and contribute to your community...not burn it down. Spides.

its part of the uk so the flag should fly 7 days a week 52 weeks of the year another brilliant idea from the crackpots above if the governments/councils of this country focused on running the country rather than winding us all up with there crackpot ideas it would be a better place for all

You're not misinformed at all mate the problem is sooooo many different opinions and all are wrong and all are right. I just find living from day to day hard enough without this grief.

Hi fets ;) was waiting for you. Mate if I could offer a solution I'd get on a bike,in my car and get down to wherever I needed to go and offer it with all my heart. We will move on and we have but it really is going to take a while and I'll be long dead. Everyone is entitled to an opinion fets everyone, right wrong indifferent :)

No worries Mick mate - it was always going to be a big ask to expect a community that has been divided along religious lines for generations to heal itself overnight,as I'm sure every single family has tales of persecution to tell at the hands of the Provos,or the Black and Tans,or whoever.
Sometimes it's easy to forget just how far Ulster has come when you look at the barricades and bombings of 30 years ago.
As I said, most folk I meet of either faith just want to get on with their lives and live in peace, not looking under the car for a mercury tilt switch every time they go shopping,or dreading their kids getting kneecapped for being kissing a catholic/protestant.
I just hope that both sets of extremists are given little support from the decent majority, and that flag flying is no longer seen as an excuse to score cheap political points.
The province has come too far to risk a return to the bad old days.

As always fets,put perfectly.
I agree. I love it when he posts he's a smart man.

That's the point though..... some members of the community don't see it as part of the UK / don't think it should be part of the UK / don't want it to be part of the UK.
It's part of the legacy of the Empire, in the same way the Spanish would like Gibralter back and the Argentinians think that the Malvinas come under their soverenty.
