Three times as many people will have died in car accidents across Europe yesterday than in this tragedy, yet no one is seriously suggesting banning the motor car.

There are some scary posts in this thread. Some people need to read/watch V for Vendetta to see how very close we are to becoming that scary future.

Nice is a tragedy and my thoughts are with them, but to start thinking we need to give more power to the corrupt governments in our countries and expect that they will diligently use these powers to only use them on dangerous suspects is laughable. Give them an inch and they'll take a yard.

It's hard not to insult someone who wants to take your civil liberties away and is advocating a V for Vendetta society. We should be threatening to ban them instead of the people who find their ideas repugnant. Some of the comments on here would find sympathy with the proponents of Sharia law, which has to be the ultimate irony.

If it's hard not to insult just don't post. One insult breeds another and so on. In the end a slanging match ensues and the topic is lost.

The west will change like Israel. It will become more right-wing if the left doesn't offer anything to combat terrorism. They basically said the exact same things 20 years ago that our media and mainstream politicians are saying today. But voters need to feel safe and turned decisively right as a result of the left having no policies to counter terrorism.

Our police forces will militarize, the laws will change to give governments more authority to eavesdrop. We'll eventually pursue policies that are currently deemed politically incorrect, like Israel's security wall and programs like stop-and-frisk.

A bit depressing if it happened, but terrorism has been around for millenia and life has gone on, people want to be safe, but they also want freedom, the chances of a police state set up to protect the populous cannot be dismissed, but I think we are not quite at that stage.
