That was £25 you could have put towards your ST!

I used to do a bit of matched betting using the free offers bookies give you but I stopped when my bank blocked my bank account because they thought a 20 year old making loads of transactions to bookies was possibly fraudulent. Hoping to start again soon.
Yeah but I have already bought my SC and came home from work early and £25 won't change my life (neither will 600 but its fun to see if I can get up to it - I'd put it towards a champs league away)

No but loads of £25 wasted = big money over the years (not that I can talk, I'm on a gambling thread and I waste money left, right and centre!)

Yes but I don't gamble, this is an experiment. Last time I gambled (other than £2.50 accumilators) any serious money was when I put £50 on City to beat Utd at 7/1 when we did them 4-1 at home with SWP scoring in injury time.

-- Wed Jun 08, 2011 6:53 pm --

blue charm, hamilton 9pm

If my T20 has finished in a win, I'll go with that. What odds?
only 4/1 joint fav

That would put me on nearly £450.

WOuld you say its a good tip or just a feeling?

Fair enough then. The biggest bet I've put on was £50 too I think on an accumulator. Obviously lost :(

I got the bull.

ehehe, you've an inclination for 'risk-loving' behaviour in this case, but you can easily counter that as you become even more aware of value and risk management, and enforce your self-discipline.

if you also pick your games correctly you'll find the going a lot easier too.

Haha, any tips then on picking?

yeah sure - play games of skill against other people (who are less skilled) and avoid anything in a casino (except proper poker cash games and tournaments) of which the test you just did explained in detail.

don't throw away money betting at the bookies unless you actually know something, like perhaps politics or sports betting.

personally I find sports betting a challenge, and find it quite hard to make money on; I win regularly on backgammon & poker, but I probably lose money betting on City. I win money betting on politics (primarily on US elections)

there are people who do well laying odds on BetFair (despite their rake) and if you can find any of them I'm sure they'll clue you in too - but this usually takes more stake money than placing bets.

generally speaking 'punters' who go to the bookies and down the casinos lose money hand over fist, although they'll often not realise it, or they'll deny it.

I guess I shouldn't grumble, because for a period I made my living off of people like the above, who for one reason or another were losers and didn't mind playing people like me who would consistently take their money.

Yeah, I read that quote on the questionnaire site you linked too, it speaks truth.

So how much money did you make from this sort of thing (if you don't mind me asking, of course)?

lancs lose 2 wickets in a over ;), 119-3 after 14.3.

I know!! But still at 1.35 to win (I bought at 1.9) so odds are still in my favour. Lei have gone from 2.1 to 3.5 so the market thinks Lancs are doing ok

I'll just say I once paid for my entire mortgage in a weekend (for the whole year) although I was pissed-off I didn't win the thing - I placed second in a big poker tournament.

I regularly used to grind away and make my money for the day in an hour or two, and then go off and do what I wanted to do.

gambling for a living isn't glamourous or romantic (although some girls I used to know thought it was) it's just like any other job, and when I took my biggest win above I didn't go 'hmm, I'm going to do that again next weekend' I fucked-off for 3 months with a journalist girl and had fun.

you do lose sometimes, and that can be galling, especially to complete imbeciles who don't know what they're doing but have simply gotten lucky; you have to be nice to them (some pros I know will insult them, but this is stupid also) and just dedicate the next day/week to repairing the damage they might have done to your bankroll in a few minutes or hours if they've hit you hard.

overall I never had a losing month, and my worst draw-down was against an impossibly lucky Argentine who took around 450 quid off me before I just decided to call it a night. That pissed me off, but every once in a while you get hit with someone bullet-proof like that. You have to watch out for the wales too, because they'll play you for larger amounts which might tempt you - because you know you're a superior player, but once in a while they'll beat you (and like to brag about it to their friends) and so you must guard against risking too much of your bankroll, which is one of the most common mistakes of professional gamblers.

* and I also 'lost' $250,000 to a guy 'on purpose' to induce him into making a business deal because he had connections; strictly speaking not a real loss - or a fair one, because he was using loaded dice against me, ehehe

Cheers :)

So would you say about 5-10% is a good figure to play with?

Also, I'm guessing you did this online before the new rules for online poker in USA came in, where did you play?
