Trying to gamble up to a season ticket.....

I played in person 'over the table' and online.

you can always find local action, and that's something you can cultivate if you've got your head screwed on; local poker schools and backgammon clubs, etc.

when you travel it's usually for a tournament (and on a circuit) and you have hotels and airlines to pay on top of everything else.

online is probably the best because you have no additional expenses, and you can always find action anytime you want it. I was once at a tourney and sharing a room with someone I knew but had never roomed with. I sometimes did this alone, but occasionally shared with friends I was familiar with, most often in a big suite. Anyway, this guy snored like a freight train - I'm not kidding, and I couldn't bloody sleep (and I didn't have any ear plugs, LOL). Even in the bathroom with the door closed it wasn't any use. I didn't have a very successful trip that weekend because of my lack of sleep, so if you're not feeling great or have a cold etc when you've shelled out to go play a tourney & attend a meet ahead of time, it's obviously not optimal. This is another reason why playing online can provide you with extra advantages, because you can pick and choose, it's very convenient.

Thanks for all of the advice, really appreciate it.

Hopefully, if my lay bet with Uruguay/Netherlands comes off I'll have a small float I can start off with and build from there.

To practice it is then!

and if you're going to take up poker you should invest in a couple of fundamental books on poker theory and play.

Any you recommend? I've looked at the Amazon bestsellers, but these might not be the best to go for, just the most popular.

i dont understand all that bollocks, i just put numbers on and hope its a winner:)

and that's probably why you're not a pro gambler my man

;o)

(and here's the link once again for a bit of a laugh: <a class="postlink" href="http://www.okcupid.com/tests/the-professional-gambler-aptitude-test" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.okcupid.com/tests/the-profes ... itude-test</a> as this sort of subject keeps on coming up in these sorts of threads, and there's really no reason for anyone to throw their money away unless they couldn't care less about it and/or enjoy losing)

i'm not a pro mate you are right, i went back in to play on 0 and lost 120 in the same mins it took me t win the 600, happy with what i won so i did one and went back to work.

Going off your posts in this thread De Niro - I had 3quid in my Paddy POwer, so I thought I'll have a dabble at the roulette.. went on got upto £45 using your numbers :-) then left at £35 after my Tenner gamble failed me... Nice one.

it all depends what you're looking to do really...

if you're going to play poker I'd strongly suggest this:-

<a class="postlink" href="http://www.twoplustwo.com/books/poker/theory-of-poker/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.twoplustwo.com/books/poker/theory-of-poker/</a>

and also Sklansky's book on tournament poker (because the big wins will be tournament ones - and/or SAGs, sit-and-go tournaments, which are also very good practice for final table situations)

he's a brilliant author, poker player, and theorist.

if you wanted to specialise in Ohama Hi-Lo (a great game for fleecing idiots, because even fewer understand how to correctly play this) then there's another book by Mike Cappelletti that a really strong player I know recommended, and of course there are lots of others... but I'd leave the Hi Lo alone until you understand the rudiments of poker theory and are already winning at No Limit Hold Em.

so I'd just suggest Sklansky's two books for starters, which should be enough to put you in a much stronger position playing for low to medium stakes than most 'leisure' players you'll come against who don't know their arse from their elbow at a poker table; and people like this are everywhere because they're too lazy to do anything about it and reckon they already know it all.

once you're getting a flavour of things you will start reading other things, but Sklansky knows his stuff and puts it across very well.

then you'll need to buy me a pint when I'm next in town...

;o)
