Tuition fees

Wonder how the students in Withington who voted in John Leech feel about this (not that the Labour candidate was any better, according to one questionnaire she was on a one woman campaign to bomb iran).

How power corrupts ai? £10,000 in tuition a year - we're all in this together - except anyone whose daddy wont pay for tuition.. then we're not quite in this together. Its in no way surprising, considering the "free schools" move and all the other attacks on poorer people trying to make a way through life. The sad thing is, this like all the other attacks on general fairness, is not necessary there are other ways of running higher education and the country - which may not create multi-millionaires but could have the majority better off (and atleast educated!).

I hope that students come together with all the other sectors of society being squeezed out for the rich- and prevent this from happening. Its only because students failed in 1998 that there's tuition fees now, I hope they dont fail again.

The problem here is the numbers of students. I did'nt go to uni but some of my mates did and received a student grant, which eased the hardship somewhat, plus doing bar work, postman/woman at Christmas etc; Blair's ridiculous policy of wanting to send 50% of kids to uni has resulted in dumbed down degree courses and thousands wasting their time and their parents' money when they should be in employment straight from school. The sad thing is that the kids who should be receiving grants (Roughly 5% went to uni 40 years ago) ,are now stuck with the prospect of astronomical fees for an education that should be provided free for those with the abilities to benefit from such an education.

I'm glad the fees are getting more expensive. Every tax dodger i see getting bladdered in town/fallowfield/didsbury, i think 'there's another for the mcdonalds, asda, royal mail network rail management gradute scheme'. Yes that's right do a degree in graphic design, get a job as a trainee logistics manager or a degree in music and get a job as a trainee manager at comet.

So would you prefer it if nobody was going to university? No doctors being trained, no lawyers, no dentists, no architects? I could go on. There are some mickey mouse degrees out there but generalising to that extent is completely wrong.

No mate, it's just the mickey mouse degree's that rattle my cage! A perfect excuse for lazy twats to bum about, while at the same time universities swelling their coffers by charging stupid fees for stupid courses. There are so many jobs going to the wrong people just because they have studied a totally irrelevant subject but a 2:1 score in it anyway.

i have to agree with the main tenant of the argument here
far too many stay on into sixth form/college who should be getting jobs and then the same at uni
you end up with a disgruntled workforce with more qualifications they require for their job, people with degrees in 'sports science' working at the Village gym wondering why they aren't earning top dollar for some sporting greats!
then i was quite surprised to find that EU students who study in England pay the same fees as home students even though in their country of origin the fees are as much as £20,000!
that's our taxes funding EU students who then return to the EU after they have finished so their country benefits from the education and benefits from our country and also denying a place that could be given to a home student
no wonder the cars dropping the students off last week at my son's uni had belgian, french, german etc plates!!!!

I'm a student and I would agree with this whole heartedly. Too many people are going to university, it has become unsustainable and now they're paying for it. What's wrong with people going straight into work if they're capable? There's only so many subjects that require compulsory university style education, such as the sciences, medicine and law. As a result we are left with a devalued degree system and a future work force up to their eye balls in debt.

It will be interesting to see if this changes things in Scotland. I go to Edinburgh and pay £1800 a year for my tuition, roughly half of the maximum English fee. It was part of the reason I came here actually. So could this rise by twice as much as well?

That just makes you look silly.
Also find me an EU country that charges £20K a year? There isn't one.
In France less than £200 a year!

Disgraceful. I'd imagine this will deter and prevent many of the brightest kids from a working class background from attending.
