Turkey

If all this is true, the military need to succeed. One good thing is that out of a population of 75 million, there seem to be only a few thousand on the streets, and that is in spite of all the reckless rallying calls by Erdogan and others. They look peaceful, the crowds, anyway.

I would think quite a few of those are people simply on their way home, were at the airport etc..

Hopefully, it is both a successful and bloodless coup.

Reports suggesting 17 police officers have been killed so far by the military

Obama just released a statement telling Turkish citizens to respect the elected government. Meaning the coup appears to have failed.

Civil war, then, or total dictatorship by Erdogan. Such a shame nobody captured him.

If it does fail then Erdogan will be pretty much unstoppable and will make sure the army can't do it again.

One day a leading political figure will put out a statement in reply telling the US to stop policing the world and to f*cking mind its own business.

20 years ago the US government would have backed this coup. Now we, for some reason, support an Islamist, terrorist-supporting strongman who is hellbent on destroying a key NATO member.

Such a shame Obama turned out to be a weak-willed fool. Syria 2.0 where Obama tries to "fix" things and they end up getting worse.
