Turkish Barbers

Just had the mop chopped at one of the Turkish barbers round here and they've done a cracking job. Disappointed I couldn't pick up half an oz on my way out though.

On the issue of ‘not putting everything through the till’, are you happy to pay more tax then, simply because people who should be paying tax don’t want to?

If the cost is paying £8 instead of £15 for a haircut then that's fine by me really. I'm going to be paying more tax anyway with the state of things at the moment. They've just put up our council tax by 3% and I doubt a rise in foreign barbers is primarily responsible.

This applies for anybody that takes cash and not just the barbers. Are we going to target tradesmen who do cash only jobs too? There is only bother about this because of who it is and not what it is because really it's nothing new.

Remember that a single wealthy individual will likely avoid more tax than thousands of barbers put together, when are these going to be targeted?

I'm guessing trading standards that have just been on breakfast tv are also making it up doh! Anyhow ignore them and the legit traders complaints because blueuntrue has had another Hans Christian moment in his small village.

The mini mart and a few ‘Turkish’ barbers near me regularly get raided and shut down. You rarely if ever see any customers in them either. The other local business’s are all shutting down though, even though they do have customers.

It's a bit cheaper up here near Chorley! That's just for a basic chop, anything else like fades and beards and it goes up to £20.

Maybe I should have clarified. There being shut down and then they reopen again a few weeks later - quite a few as different ‘business’s’. The police don’t seem to be able to stop it.

I’d argue they shouldn’t be open in the first place.

Of course they should but there is a greater good argument and the cost of policing and investigating it means there's nothing that can be done anyway. So as long as my haircut is cheaper then yes I'm happy to turn a blind eye.

The greater good argument is that these people aren't blind corporations harbored in Luxembourg who pay no tax, that's a much bigger problem. Instead these are people who will very likely push cash back into the local area and that's good for communities so the tax is being paid albeit in kind locally which is miles better.

Or is it better that pubs and local businesses go bust whilst the government regains a bit of extra tax to waste on an infrastructure project 100 miles away or to fund tax cuts to the wealthy?

Go to Ron's in Altrincham. He's located right near the interchange on the road leading to Tesco's. Cheap as chips, I think about £7-8 and even cheaper for pensioners and kids.

Yes it's wrong but it's just the nature of the job. We're talking here of the lowest level of business, people who really are probably just getting by so there won't be much tax to pay anyway (if any).

It's different if they're laundering criminal money but at least in my experience I just don't see it. The Turkish barbers I go in are always busy, they're not ghost companies unless the barbers are working in some underworld at night! I'm not so sure that Chorley is a hotspot setting for Breaking Bad.

It would take HMRC and an army of tens of thousands to tackle it so really you can only expect people to do the right thing but they aren't going to whilst they can get away with it.

I have an Indian and Chinese takeaway just up the road from me and neither of them accept card and neither of them deliver on Just Eat. I don't know if they do creative accounting but they're always packed to the rafters because they're miles cheaper, if people were that bothered then they could always go elsewhere but they won't.

He can use scissors as well it's up to you to tell him what you want doing. If you're young and want your hair longer and styling you're probably going to have to go to a fancy hairdressers and pay more.

I have little doubt that this is just the latest distraction to avoid dealing with billionaire tax avoiders and multi-nationals basing themselves in tax havens.
When the evidence is gathered, and the cases concluded, there may be a reason for the absolute certainty expressed here and in the press. I will reserve judgement until that point, and perhaps even get my nostrils done.
