I go back a long way, nearly 70 now, so I enjoyed the wonderful commentary by the likes of Kenneth Wolstenhome and Motty, for example. These modern ‘commentators’ don’t actually commentate, they tend to chat with their colleague about stuff about football. I don’t mind this with cricket, because there is more space between the action, but if you were to ask me who is on the pitch for England this evening I think I could name 7 or 8 but the others never get mentioned. Motty and Ken just used to tell us who was on the ball, and maybe made a comment like ‘great pass’ or ‘what a goal’. These numpties only seem to want to witter meaningless stuff.

The commentary and analysis on football has never been so bad.

Other sports are a fresh air (apart from bits of golf when over exposing and blowing smoke up that Irish rag player and Woods).

As for football, I very rarely have any comms on and just play music while watching telly games.

Different times. These commentators are working most days these days and don’t have the same time to do research and hardly any of it is going to be original, barring some niche stats.

When it was one game a week, without the internet, you felt like the commentators added to the games as they had stuff you didn’t know up their sleeves.

Just look at McCoist. When he wasn’t doing much, he was described as a breath of fresh air. Now, I’ll tell you something, he’s like all the others, he really is.

It’s just overkill.

The vast majority of the games you watched with those commentators you mentioned would have been highlights.
On the few live games they did show, I don’t recall there being an “expert” up in the gantry with them (happy to be corrected on that) so no one to talk shite with

Ratboy and tyler used to go off rambling about what they having for dinner or something like that , instead of describing to sky viewers what beautiful football the best manager in the world is producing in our country

If i only had sound of the game i had no idea who is playing, not describing what dave did is a cime in itself ! Only rousing when whoever scored against us . Just give us a crowd noise option !

When we're playing in Europe, I tend to watch on an Indian stream.
English commentary, with an English commentator, but he tends to be on his own. So no "bloke down the pub banter", just what's going on before our eyes. Perfect.
