TV commentators

During our CL game against Slovan a few weeks ago, McCoist and Fletcher were rattling on and on about the upcoming boxing on the following Saturday. This was whilst play was going on. Unbelievable really. I found myself shouting at the telly "commentate on the fcuking game, for Christ's sake ! ".
Commentating standards are currently at an all time low, IMHO.

To be fair to Tyler, he did give the Aguero moment some silence.

For me Davies’ line that sticks in my head is “You have to say that is magnificent” when Maradona scored his second goal.

I wasn’t around for the Lee moment, but obviously have heard it since!
Oooh AHT, you’re a lot younger than you seem then;)

I go back a long way, nearly 70 now, so I enjoyed the wonderful commentary by the likes of Kenneth Wolstenhome and Motty, for example. These modern ‘commentators’ don’t actually commentate, they tend to chat with their colleague about stuff about football. I don’t mind this with cricket, because there is more space between the action, but if you were to ask me who is on the pitch for England this evening I think I could name 7 or 8 but the others never get mentioned. Motty and Ken just used to tell us who was on the ball, and maybe made a comment like ‘great pass’ or ‘what a goal’. These numpties only seem to want to witter meaningless stuff.
Matterface is terrible for this. He must bring reams of paper filled with boring crap that he feels compelled to cram into the match

Why do we need commentators ?
My eyesight isn't too good and my TV small by current standards which, make it difficult to read shirt numbers or names. It would be great if commentators could restrict themselves mainly to player identification.
The worse decision in TV broadcasting was to have 2 commentators, thus creating the opportunity for annoying off-action chat.
Yesterday Matterface informed us that, including Curtis, 8 other players called Jones had played for England but, surprise, surprise Cilla, there had been more Smiths. Fascinating in-play commentary.

In fairness to the commentator they will have been instructed to do that.

The inane stats do my head in. There's often more stats put forward and discussion of other totally irrelevant matters, than there is about the football in front of them. Even on the radio, it's the same.

Thank God for the mute button
