Txiki Begiristain

So what's the alternative? should we have them on longer contracts? Even more difficult to move them on if that was the case.

I have no idea. I'm not a director of football.

I do however have a sales background and I know having assets that everyone knows you need to shift soon are no longer an asset.

Our squad is full. Fact.
We are still trying to recruit. Fact.
We are struggling to move players on and have done for a few years now. Fact.

I find this less than ideal and worthy of discussion.

So why have them all ending the same year? I doubt the club envisaged such a drop off in some of the players.
They're not all the same age, they weren't all signed at the same time.

Presumably 4 years was the optimum time to get the required impact on the salary reduction for FFP purposes. The fact they weren't signed at the same time is irrelevant - it was driven by FFP. The ages issue is pretty standard for Zaba and Clichy - Zaba was 31 in January and Clichy is 31 tomorrow so both 32ish when the contracts end. Zaba has regressed whilst Clichy is doing just fine and, now Pep is here, I wouldn't be surprised if he is offered an extension.

YaYa is a more difficult one but he was the at the peak of his powers in 2013. I suspect they would have preferred a 3 year contract to this summer but had little option because of FFP again.

Repeat FFP FFP FFP and reduction in wages to push the problem to a future date when we can comply. Hands were tied in 2013.

Not read anywhere that a third party was involved.

There are press reports he'd signed a pre contract with us.

Reports then followed that Porto had forced his hand.

Reports then followed that he'd signed a new deal.

We then signed for his reported buy out clause.

It does seem very odd thing to be so hung up on. It was all widely reported in the press.

It also doesn't negate the fact our director of football has too many senior players for a squad and we are still by all accounts trying to add more players.

Love Txiki or hate him, there is literally no arguement to the fact it leaves us with players we simply need rid of and all of Europe know so.
That is a terrible position to negotiate from.

I remember there being reports that a third party was holding the deal up as well as Porto playing silly buggers with the deal and with the player, I wouldn't get too hung up on the in's and out's of this deal and Txiki's role in it as I seem to remember from the time that there were loads of conflicting reports with it, I suspect that nobody on here knows what happened with that one.

Agree totally. Hence, schfc6 to accuse Txiki of not doing due dilligence is ridculous

Are you Rafa Benitez ;-)

You can keep saying the same thing. I fully understand why we needed to do it.
It doesn't negate the fact that that was 3 years ago and it's not been addressed.

The jewel in Txiki's crown is Pep no doubt.
However if Pep can't get the players he wants because we can't shift the deadwood, I find that reason for concern and certainly discussion.

Surely talk of not being able to shift the 'deadwood' should wait until the end of the transfer window?

What are you agreeing with? Either Txiki, Portugal or Fernando's representatives didn't do their job.

Portugal even tried to call him up. They then even tried to appeal the ruling...

All back up exactly what I'm saying and what I've heard.

It's not hard to search. Many papers reported it in the same order I have suggested.

No it shouldn't. It's a valid point. If all the other clubs know we need to shift it, it leaves us in a shit position. So very simple.

If you're selling your car, you don't tell the guy buying it you've bought a new one and need it gone no matter what the cost do you?

That is exactly the position we find ourselves in.
