Txiki Begiristain

Our transfer dealings have been a little frustrating in the last 5 years, dating back before Begiristain arrived, but on the whole he has done a brilliant job....

Posted this earlier in the thread. If you think this proves he's done a brilliant job then fair enough but I think most people would completely disagree with you.

Ok, so I'm giving you £110m, go spend it in that transfer market. No arguing over prices. You already have Kolarov/Clichy/Zabaleta/Sagna/Kompany/Demichelis in your squad.

So go play hindsight Txiki, if it's popular I'll extend it to other areas of the pitch.

you have savic in thay list at AM txikis swapeed him when young and a raw talent for nastatic, one of his first deals and pretty much sums up his lack of judgement in player purchase in defence

Also my buys from that list

Marcos Alonso CHE £19m
Joo-Ho Park DOR £2.5m
Toby Alderweireld TH £13.5m
Savic nowt as we already had him

Only three by my reckoning are improvements on the 2012 winning side. Dinho, KdB and yep Otamendi for Lescott. Several of these will no doubt come good as they are very young. But overall bearing in mind we still have the ageing FBs from 2012 as well as several others on a major decline you have to say that our dealings have been poor.

The back five we have today are significantly worse than 4 years ago. And it has left Pep in a difficult position.

You cannot win with some of the slow witted ones, I believe the current position is pay the guy a fortune because he is the best but if we fail to sign someone who is performing well elsewhere it's because we couldn't get them and if we spunk a daft amount on someone who fails then shrug the shoulders because you can't get them all right, or most or even a toss of a coin ratio. So we keep spending hundreds of millions and not winning the league but we will again at some point probably.

The real answer is quite simple after the huge investment we have gone through if we have large deficiencies in the squad it is down to the guy/guys who bought the players.

We have currently bought two great players in 4 or so years, by anyone's standard that is poor, with the money spent that is fuckwittery of the highest order. If sane, stones and Jesus don't become top drawer very quickly he deserves to be binned
The balance of the squad is all wrong as well.

When we won the league in 2012 14 of the 25 man squad were in their prime, aged 25-29. We now have 6 players in that age bracket. That's not good. The majority of any squad should be 25-29 and then there should be a few 20-24 and 30-34 year olds with the odd U20s to complete the squad, not the other way around. There aren't enough players at the top of their game coupling enough experience with the prime years of fitness and speed.

Look at the age of the four full backs, and the importance of that position in any team.

We also knew Guardiola was coming yet the best passer of the ball in the squad is still Yaya and we've bought a number of other players who aren't particularly good passers of the ball. You notice it too because even though our passing stats as a team are high, the details of that aren't shown in the stats as the passing is often too slow and passes are often played just behind or just in front of where they should be passed so the movement of the ball isn't quite right, it's not crisp or quick enough and teams are allowing us to have possession that goes nowhere.

Look at last week at Leicester; 77% possession, 0 shots on goal in the first 80 minutes.

The organisation and planning of our squad has been inept, IMO. Whether that's Begiristain or the scouts or other names behind the scenes we don't know about or all of them collectively, it's difficult to say. But the DOF is responsible for all of those people.
