Put simply, we have created technology which has out crafts on Mars. That's us, some snotty little civilization just a few thousand years old, technologically speaking.

Imagine if a civilization exists somewhere which was where we are now a million years ago? Their technology would currently be unthinkable. In other words, just because we are only where we are up to now, doesn't mean the other billions of civilizations out there will be too.
