Because they’re not terraced streets. It’s mostly semis with driveways, some close to a quiet railway line. Loads of places for rioters to run, and difficult to seal off.

And that right there is the real world danger of ai, ai at its core is machine learning albeit at a much faster rate than us and if the ai is learning racist bile then that what it is going to produce because as much as they try and dress it up ai is the same as any other computer system in that if you put shit into it thats what you will get out, everybody laughed when microsofts ai bot became a rampant racist after 24 hrs of being set free but tbf its no different to whats happening now.

The Smiths recorded Rusholme Ruffians in 85 so basically 40 years ago. Manchester is a particularly interesting example because there are parts of the city you wouldn't have dreamed of walking alone 25 years ago - Ancoats, parts of Salford - that have now been gentrified beyond belief. Funny on a football forum as well when half the nostalgia of pre-92 is that you could get the shit kicked out of you at any game. Like you say, people's memories play ticks on them.

People's timelines on what or when a place "went to shit" is always so confused. Statistically, people are less likely to experience interpersonal violence than at any other point in history, and there have been marked declines since the mid-20th century all over the world. There's been a bit of a small movement upwards over the last year or two in the UK, but generally speaking we are living in one of the safest countries at the safest time in human history.

Great post. Of course, the wanton murder of three little girls by a 17-year-old not-right is utterly horrific and we tend to dwell in the moment when things like that happen. I highly recommend a book called 'Factfulness' by Hans Rosling, which explains why we jump to the wrong conclusions about life, and in fact they're much better than many think.

They already drafted in PSU (riot officers) from 3 forces-that should tell you how stretched they were.

Secondly, pepper spray would be useless.

But even more so, where do all the detainees go? My force has about 60 cells-no doubt Merseyside have more but by no means enough to literally round everyone up.

To arrest one violent prisoner can take 4/6 officers plus transport in secure vans..very soon you have nobody on the streets and everyone in queues in custody.

They will be nicked over the next days.
