UK government to block Scottish gender bill - first time a devolved government has been blocked from passing a law.

Posted on here a couple of weeks ago, that it was unfortunate people poured so much political attention on a tiny group of individuals. That it had become normal to bring them up to play the most divisive sort of UK politics, ridiculous at a time when our country faces so many serious issues.

Sturgeon has now gone the whole hog and put them in the firing line for the whole of Scottish/UK/English political relations.

I can't let the Tories escape without criticism either. They identified this as a politically profitable issue for them several years ago, and signalled their intent to exploit it.

Everyone deserves respect and humane compassion. I hope people remember that when thinking about the people who this bill would affect.

I don't have any answers as to what is right here. I just know this whole treatment of the situation is wrong.

I get what you are saying. But the devolved parliament passes bills regulaly, how exactly do you think they earmarked this specific one for the constitutional wrestle they supposedly want out of it? What made them bank on this being the second bill that the uk parliament would overrule?

I see that woman that did the raping is not being sent to a female prison. I suspect this is because she has a substantial cock and balls and is in fact a bloke. Not very inclusive though?

They already were in a woman’s nick on remand and has required government intervention to remove her. This is exactly what’s wrong with the Scottish government removing a level transitioning from the requirements, had he/she undergone the snip or hormone therapy the risk they posed would have been significantly reduced.

Just a bit of a shame that extreme examples like this detract from the legit trans community desire for recognition - just because a rapist doesn't fancy their chances doing a stretch on the nonce wing.

They aren’t going to a womens prison now so the Scottish governement can obviously have the laws they want and work around any extreme examples this. Laws should be for the benefit of the population in general not adapted for rare cases like this.
Either way it’s a matter for Holyrood and it’s non of Rishi Sunak’s business.

They were already undergoing hormone therapy.

But an impotent nonce is still a nonce. I doubt it would make much difference.

How long for though? It takes years for the effects of HT, hence why the current legal threshold for a certificate is 2 years as that’s when most will experience some effects of it. It takes 6 or more years for it to be “complete”.

Unfortunately until Scotland gets independence it very much is a case for the UK government. Until then there are matters exclusively reserved for the UK, such as issuing passports. Funny though, the UK government had said they wanted to work with the Scottish government to work out some of the issues, whereas Sturgeon immediately starts shouting her mouth off about seeing them in court.
