Eh? We don't particularly need to move, there is hardly a country in Europe that does not have an unemployment problem

That's not the point though is it. For one, "need" is subjective, but secondly we barely have the option, and option is a good thing. If we weren't so poor at speaking other languages, we would have the opportunity to work and live where we please.

Fact is, if an English speaking German is better than an English candidate for a job here, he gets it. The same could be said of English people in Germany, but they speak English, we don't speak German.

It's not really a big issue though is it, most people would not even consider working abroad, most British people chose to work Australia the US and Canada if they do move

They choose to move there generally because it's an English speaking nation (Like I have with NZ).......If given the opportunity to live in France, Spain, Germany or Italy and having learnt the language, I'm sure most people would jump at the chance.

As was said above, when modern languages were taken off the curriculum, we lost any opportunity to take advantage.

Full of racists like this guy.

The only surprise to me is that it has taken the main parties so long to launch their attack. They did not too badly in that recent Rotherham by election for a party that supposedly only takes Tory voters.Solid Labour voting territory.

The Limp Dems will become irrelevant except in their strongholds. It's up to UKIP to overtake them as the Third Main party which they may well do.

Maybe if the main parties and their press organs looked at why UKIP was gaining popularity rahter than trawling through facebook accounts etc, then they would not be as reviled by large sections of the populace.

I didn't know languages are off the curriculum. My niece is 6 and she's learning French (waste of time; IMO they should by teaching Spanish) at her school.

My bad, I should have stated compulsory curriculum.

Actually a quick check shows that Modern Foreign Language is compulsory up to Stage 3 and is an option for stage 4 - So it turns out I was speaking a load of old arse.

But even in solid Labour territory there are still plenty of votes for other parties to pick up. The tory vote fell by 11.4%, the BNP vote by 2% and the Lib Dem vote by 13.9%, meaning 27.3% of the vote to pick up. The swing to UKIP was 15.7%. Labour actually gained vote share in that by-election in a seat they already held despite Respect also gaining an 8.3% swing so Labour can be pretty happy with that election result considering the circumstances.

I used to think the threat from the far right was just a load of bollox. They had too many nutters that would be hard pushed to remember which way round to sit on the bog, let alone organise a political threat!!

I've got to say though, this show of shit UKIP do worry me a little. They seem to have fooled many of the Daily Mail readers into thinking they are just the Tories with a new name.
