im a bit vague on this so do excuse me- so if khan continiues and goes ahead in August with this expansion of ULEZ why dont the Government simply over rule him, they do have the power to do so i assume?

The courts have made a ruling.

The whole thing started because the government lost a court case brought by Client Earth.

Well, they could but, then again they can’t. As they made extra TFL funding entirely contingent on the Mayor expanding the ULEZ scheme, as they made clear in the letter from Shapps, they would have to write to the Mayor and explicitly tell him that ‘they had changed their minds’. Now that doesn’t play into the narrative that this is all Labours fault, so they won’t do that. Actually, they want it to go ahead as they see an opportunity for further division, which, rather sadly, seems to be the only policy they have left.

Politics has always been a cynical game, but it seems to me it's more cynical than ever. Perhaps because the Tories, in particular, have realised that they can hoodwink a very significant part of the people with specious bollocks like this. Brexit, if it proved nothing else, proved how relatively easy it is to con people.

I would have a grain of respect for them if they said - look this ULEZ thing was a bad decision, and we were the ones that passed the legislation. We will now withdraw/substantially amend that legislation, and accept that a certain amount of bad air has to be accepted, given that we have fucked the economy and almost everyone is poorer.

It would be a pretty sad state of affairs, but at least it would be honest.

Instead, what they are trying to do is fob the blame off on Labour and Khan in particular. The Daily Mail has been running the line for some time that Khan is worse than a thousand Hitlers, so this fits the narrative well. Many people, for a variety of reasons - let's be polite and say not just racism - are more than happy to go along with this.

The scary thing is this - I don't honestly think Starmer is any better. He will just give us another narrative of bollocks instead of facing up to at least some of the fucking piles of shit this government has created. He is not prepared to do anything to reverse any of the egregious policies of this shower. He'll just tinker at the edges, and ordinary people will be no better off.

I've always been sorry that so many people don't bother to vote. But now I can see where they are coming from.

I think you’re exactly right about Starmer, there won’t be much change for the honeymoon period, probably just a change in tac in certain areas such as actually processing asylum claims rather than ignoring them.

However, the last Labour government had to adopt a similar approach and it wasn’t until midway through the Parliament that Labour began to change things.

To be truthful, I just want a bit of peace and quiet in government and allow them to go about their business in remedying some of the major issues in the country.

There seem to be no depths the Tories can reach without someone claiming that Labour would be no better.

Just accept that the Tories are lower than vermin, and decisions on who to vote for get a lot easier.

Unfortunately, Starmer has firmly ruled out reversing so many of their most damaging policies. The academisation of schools for example. A massive con putting public money into private pockets. He wants even more privatisation of the NHS. I could go on. I am going to do him the courtesy of assuming he isn't a liar, although some on the broad left of politics seem to hope that he is.

He has even ruled out higher taxes for the rich, which would not cost anything, by definition. I can understand him saying 'We can't afford to spend £400 billion on X' but I'm damned if I can understand a reluctance to raise more revenues.

It really isn't very inspiring. Indeed, if I was going to argue for someone to vote Labour, my argument would largely be based on the incompetence and corruption of the present team. Not that I think Labour's policies are appealing.

Because they are stuck until they actually get in. Every reverse would be hammered by the Tories, media and rich.

Do you not think it weird why they aren’t coming out with policy changes? Apart from the Tories nicking half of Labours ideas, it would be daft to give anybody ammo when in such a good position. The only way is down for Labour.

I do think there are improvements that can be made at 'administrative' level at little or no cost. This is what is generally called good management. But while that is all to the good, it scarcely sets the blood racing.

The country needs radical change, and I see no glimmer of a suggestion that we might get it. This man is not Attlee. He is not even Wilson. Come to that, he's not even Blair, who did some good stuff among the bad. Better than the Tories? Not hard. Inspiring? Hmm, I doubt it. I hope to be proved wrong.

It's weaponised desperation, whatever they think the issue of the day is they'll jump on it and claim they're the party who will do the opposite (but they won't). Everything nowadays is the opposite of truth, it's just grifting nonsense precipitated by an obsession with media opinion.

It's no wonder that these fools will get a beating come the election. I do hold some hope for Starmer but it'll probably only take a year or two before that falls apart and his time turns to party warring in the media.

Basically we don't need an election, we need a referendum on Westminster. I'm actually with the Scots on this but then they have lunatics in charge up there too.

I would say I'd be up there amongst the people who won't bother to vote but I have to vote to get rid of this shower of shite first.
