The stupid thing about the whole thing is that it's completely arbitrary. The technical difference between a Euro5 and a Euro6 engine isn't massive which is ironic when anyone quotes compliance. This also assumes that the vehicle manufacturers haven't cheated the tests and actually the technical emissions quoted are a complete load of bollocks anyway.
Pollution has obviously improved but Co2 associated transport emissions have barely changed over the last 40 years which proves that in terms of Co2 alone forcing the adoption of new engine technology is pointless. This isn't because the engines aren't better, it's because the engines are better however there are 100x more cars on the road.
We really should be helping people to go electric or use public transport but public transport will be on its arse for a long time so going electric is the only option. If I want to go into town today then I could take the bus instead of my car but the irony is the bus will pollute more than my electric car and cost more than a full charge!
Why are you talking about Co2?
The main difference between Euro 5 and Euro 6 is that:
Euro 5 engines focused largely on carbon dioxide emissions (CO2), while Euro 6 is primarily focused on reducing nitrogen oxide emissions (NOx).
Euro 5 engines required all diesel cars to have particulate filters (DPFs) to trap microscopic pieces of soot, while Euro 6 engines made selective catalytic reduction (SCR) or AdBlue systems mandatory for diesel cars to reduce NOx emissions.
