There’s merit in reflecting upon this outstanding win, in the context of the 6-1 from 10 years ago.
The 6-1 was a beautiful moment in time, sending a powerful message that we noisy neighbours were here to stay.
The game on the weekend said so much more. It signified the progress we have made both on and off the pitch. It showed that the gap between the two clubs has become wider, and that steady and astute leadership in all aspects of our business produces quality on the pitch.
The humiliation which we inflicted on them was even more powerful than the 6-1. Their ‘fan base’ had to suffer us playing like it was a training exercise. Their ‘leadership’ had to endure our wonderful travelling fans mocking them endlessly.
It was a moment where they collectively knew that it might take a decade for them to catch up to us, and I’m sure they were thinking they may never catch up.
So well done City. We put the building blocks in place to ensure ongoing success. The rabble down the road don’t even know where to start.
