How does it impact their ability to play the ball? They were nowhere near the ball
They both stopped running toward Rashford because he was offside.

And even if they hadn’t, he was running with the ball between his feet for 15-20 yards, so that was going to stop them from playing it.

That is ignoring the fact that he stopped Eddie from charging out to put his boot through the ball and distracted Eddie from Fernandes’ run.

Unpopular opinion but Ake and Akanji are the sort of players we’d have bought when we had just come into wealth and were fighting for Top 4. They’re the sort of players I’d expect Newcastle to buy now.

Both have played well at points for us of course, as did e.g. Craig Bellamy when we bought him (but I don’t think we’d have him now). It’s an odd transfer strategy. I’d lump Phillips and Gomez in that category too, and possibly Grealish.

Ultimately I think there can be too much disregard for strength “on paper” - yes it’s not everything, but a centre back pairing of Dias, Laporte and/or Stones (putting aside injuries) should always be our preferred one.

Agreed and they are both a big reason why we are struggling to get the ball through the centre at the minute. Both Rodri and Bernardo were having to drop directly in front of them first half leaving us with a huge gap to the forwards and the entire United team in between.

Read he law here:

  • a player moving from, or standing in, an offside position is in the way of an opponent and interferes with the movement of the opponent towards the ball this is an offside offence if it impacts on the ability of the opponent to play or challenge for the ball; if the player moves into the way of an opponent and impedes the opponent's progress (e.g blocks the opponent) the offence should be penalised under Law 12
He doesnt stop or intefere with Ederson moving "towards the ball"...neither does it impact on Edersons ability to play the ball

Where the rule is wrong is that he impacts on decision making....but the rule above seems to only take account for physical actions
The laws of the game can’t assume decision making.
