United (A) | Post Match Thread

We need Dias/Stones/Laporte back in that defence asap, we are technically playing with our 4th and 5th choice centre backs. Akanji and Ake may not be making silly mistakes as such, but they where static for their second goal and Everton's equalizer. The other 3 are clearly a leval above.
As for our attack? Fuck knows. Likes of Bernardo, Foden, Gundog and Mahrez in the worst form of their city careers, which leaves Haaland starving upfront.

Some final thoughts - a lot of our play from the back is so slow it is easy to set up against and defend. In the past Eddie has been able to break the lines with unbelievable passes out which helps negate that. Yet again today he opted for 5 yard passes most of the time and on the two occasions he went for a more telling pass it went straight out. Is this a deliberate change of tactics or just lack of confidence? Either way with the way our back four played today it meant Rodri and Bernardo had to keep dropping so deep for the ball it led to having a huge gap to Haaland and that makes finding him very hard.

We are so unbalanced now as a team. Phil and others need to have a hard look at how they are trying to influence the big matches - I thought we'd see a big reaction but again our left hand side (Cancelo & Foden), until Jack came on, looked more concerned with throwing hands up in the air and pointing to others - not great and limits us big time.

Pep needs to get to work on how to play with a powerful centre forward in the team. You could put Benzema, Haaland and Mbappe up top for us and they would all be starved of the ball. IT IS ALL TOO SLOW... We scored because one time we got behind them and pulled the ball back. Surely we should be doing this about 10 or 15 times per match.

I am fucking raging.

Their 1st goal is a disgrace. How has the referee deemed that a fair goal? Of course Rashford has interfered with play, he's a yard away and Akanji can't get across because he's stood in the way. It completely swung the momentum after we were in complete control. Disgraceful.

As for our performance, thought we were very average 1st half and just one shot on target the whole game is a concern. Once again Haaland barely had an influence on the game. We need to improve. 2nd half we were far better and controlled it without creating loads.

But we've been screwed there and I can't get over it.
He’s not even a yard away….

Did you see the interview? He clarified what he meant by that, which was he doesn’t mind when we don’t or can’t win trophies if our attitude, mindset, effort and performances are still good despite it… then said, at the moment they aren’t, so he’s not happy with them.
Attitude and mindset are defined by the coaching staff. Effort the players and performance a combination of the other three. He's responsible for 2/3rds of this. Sort it out pep.

I am stating the obvious here but we would of seen the game out (even with the bent officials) if both our first choice centre back were fit
Yep. No leaders.

Dias and Stones would have lead out there today. It would also help if our actual leader and captain had come on at 0-1 up to sort out the midfield.

Unpopular opinion but Ake and Akanji are the sort of players we’d have bought when we had just come into wealth and were fighting for Top 4. They’re the sort of players I’d expect Newcastle to buy now.

Both have played well at points for us of course, as did e.g. Craig Bellamy when we bought him (but I don’t think we’d have him now). It’s an odd transfer strategy. I’d lump Phillips and Gomez in that category too, and possibly Grealish.

Ultimately I think there can be too much disregard for strength “on paper” - yes it’s not everything, but a centre back pairing of Dias, Laporte and/or Stones (putting aside injuries) should always be our preferred one.

Yep. Our recruitment on the whole has been piss poor.

We've gone for the big star players who cost a lot rather than players who actually fit our side.

That and very mediocre players, Phillips, Gomez, Akanji, Ake etc.

The PL is corrupt from top to bottom, especially since the introduction of VAR.
We've won 4 in 5 because we took the refs out of it. We're not good enough this year so it's biting back. I'm mad and posting a lot. Sorry.
