United (H) Post Match Thread

Harder to take this morning than it was yesterday for some reason

Football is a mad game, win 21 games in a row, run away from the field to all but clinch the title after being written off, still in all the cups, barely concede a goal for a long part of that winning run, and one defeat against our biggest rivals and it feels like a crisis

The worrying thing is if we played them again this Sunday they would turn us over again at our place..
I’d say it’s more a worry for them than us.
When we play them in the cups we win
When they beat us in the league we still finish higher.
It’s not that unusual for things like this to happen, they raise their game for us like they did against Liverpool in 80s, but they can’t do it when it really matters
We don’t help ourselves granted with team selection and playing shite
Let’s be clear they can only win when nothing is at stake
Stopped us winning the title....by a week.
Won a game but lost The semi final of league cup
These are games where the pressure is off them. If it was the FA cup final they would shit it

That game for me showed that whilst he is probably a decent chap and a pretty good player, Jesus for me is not a City type nor a Pep type player.
Just my opinion but I've thought this for quite a while now and I think yesterday's game confirmed it for me.
If we had to lose someone to make way for another striker, he would be my choice. I don't think we'd miss him.
I agree. I would rather let foden go up top he’s far more intelligent with his movement. Jesus works his heart out but he does not cause defences any issues & that’s his job as a striker

just remember people finishing 2nd will hurt just like we hurt today
when they have to watch us lift the trophy and having the medals hanged around our necks will be joy and derby day will seem years ago

Jesus is a great second striker, or even a winger but we need a Kane/Harland
We need a stone cold finisher to kill teams off
No way I’d sell him though

I don't understand why some posters take umbrage with other posters' rational critical comments after a result and performance like that on the post match thread.

100% agree. If we don’t get those two type strikers then I don’t see us winning a champs league anytime soon.
Too much pressure on Jesus right now for me he needs a bit of space to learn more

To be fair I thought Stones was great yesterday. He tried to drag us back into the match. Dias didn't play as well but he gave 100 per cent. Some of the others went missing and I am sure you know which ones. For me Bernardo and Foden are both big game players and should have started. We really need a new striker to lead the line but who can also adapt to different systems.
Yeah, I don't think this defeat can be blamed on Stones and Dias in any way.

As is all too often the case in recent home games against United, we weren't on it in the early stages and when you throw in the first-minute brain fart from Jesus that compounded things and gave them something to defend. I agree that Bernardo and Foden should've started but if we hadn't gifted them that penalty then it all might've panned out differently. United did the one thing I expected them to do and that was to have a bit of a go from the off. Others - including United fans - thought they'd park the bus. It was a depressingly familiar tale of recent home derbies - the opposition were up for it, we weren't on it as much as we have been of late, a stupid mistake leading to their opening goal, and to top it off our finishing was poor. Another perfect storm for United, and an imperfect one for us.

Jesus was doing what our forwards always do, it's one of the cornerstones of our play - you lose the ball, you get it back.

5 or 6 times a game you will see Sterling or Foden or Jesus chase back 30-40 yards to make up for losing the ball, he just got a bit overeager at the start of a derby.

90% of the time everyone applauds, the rest of the time they give a foul and kill the counter...no one's done it in our box before that I can remember.

Silly mistake but we had 95 minutes to make up for it and created plenty of chances.
Did Sterling not do it v Sunderland one year ? Correct me if I'm wrong

Dont worry it'll all seem like a bad dream when we're lifting our 3rd title in 4 years in the summer sunshine

Well we beat them when it really mattered & knocked them out of the cup

I don't agree. Jesus is absolutely Pep's kind of player: He works hard, runs for 90 minutes and never gives up and critically, he is very good at retaining possession and very rarely does he needlessly give the ball away. (I say needlessly because obviously you are always risking giving it away when taking a shot.) That is Pep's kind of player in a nutshell.

As to whether he is what we need, well that is another question.

The emotion of a derby defeat often clouds some basic facts , we created enough chances to win this game and we fluffed them , they created chances and took a couple of them . They were not the better team , they played on the break and defended for their lives a common theme in recent derby games , our profligacy cost us the game as much as Pep's poor team selection.

People lose their heads when we lose and all the more so when we lose a Derby.

The fact remains that very often when we lose, we have dominated the game in terms of possession shots for and against etc, but we have fucked up in a few key moments. We have dramatically reduced the cock-ups and that's why we are 11 points clear.

The level of concentration required is tough and we have had one or two lapses recently so that laser focus needs to come back but shit will still happen; let's hope it is avoided in cup games.

As to team selection, I wonder if in Pep's head that was his current best XI? I'd beg to differ but a brief look through that best XI thread shows how divergent views are on that.

One thing the result did enforce was how bad rag fans must have felt at that iconic moment - 93.20

it’s inconceivable; impossible to imagine how bad they must have felt. Think of how you feel right now even though we’re still 11 points clear with only 10 games left to play & remember how they were celebrating winning the league only to have it snatched from them in Fergie time - not by just another PL team but by.....

Pretty much. We fucked up having Jesus trying to defend, the inevitable early penalty ruined the game.

Not just that game but any we lose seems to be mostly down to missing really good chances. I think signing Haaland would address that to a great extent. Keep the defence as it is and with a lethal striker we’d be almost invincible next season.

True Jeśus is only 23. Still he has 79 goals in 181 matches which is not bad(0.436 goals per match). Agüero when he joined he was 23-24 and scored 124 goals in 290 games before joining us and the rest is history(0.427 goals per game). So let's hope history repeats.

Few Thoughts:

1: Pep should value the importance of derby even if it may appear meaningless/not a must win on paper

2: Players who understand the value of derby should be part of the 11 such as dino, bernado, foden, aguero.

3: Most of the current players including pep came at a time when club had already experienced pl success and united were knocked of their perch. They don't really understand the importance like the old guard of kompany, toure, silva, aguero or dino did. So they need to be given a crash course on it's importance.

4: Criticism is warranted for poor performances but no need to go over board like it happens in match day thread.

5: It just wasn't our day starting from the jesus brain fade who should be let go in the summer if we get a good price.

It was an amazing run and it had to end, but it sucks a bit it was united who did it. In any event it was fun, enjoyable and splendid. Thankyou to pep and the team for letting us experience that and guaranteeing another title in the process.

Every team plays like that against City, these get a lucky pen, and its all up hill,
i thought City played well for most of the game, and could have had 4/5 in the second half
