The "unnatural position" argument is a very recent development but of course the phrase is one of those hurrah expressions which leads to controversy, vitriol and endless argument because it is impossible to define. I think the original problem began with defenders who tried to block crosses and shots by imitating Peter Schmeichel making himself bigger to block a shot. The defenders arms were out from the body and frequently made contact with the ball. Since the intent was to block the cross/shot by fair or foul means any handball was to be considered deliberate, and the laws of the game still require handball to be deliberate. This was clearly NOT the case with Jack on Saturday but how the law is to be interpreted does require a judgement from the referee/VAR as to what is deliberate. As Saturday showed that those entrusted with such decisions are among the most nit-picking obscurantists to be found anywhere. They are akin to those black hatted, black suited, 17th century puritans who looked for any excuse, any chance phrase to have a perfectly innocent victim condemned for heresy. This bunch seek to show how powerful they are by changing the course of a cup final by gifting one of the contestants with a goal through a decision of the most monumental stupidity and then arguing that "the laws of the game allow me to make that decision". Thus is the referee the star of the show. Only even he couldn't win it for the rags.I don’t get the unnatural position argument. If Grealish’s arm movement was unnatural why did Wan Bissaka do exactly the same thing?
Says it all really. ;)Bucket hat bemusement hahaha
