Man United are fast approaching the situation whereby they are going to have to take an almighty roll of the dice regarding who is going to be managing them and what amount, if any, of funds are available to back him in the transfer market.
Moyes was handed one of the 4 biggest managers jobs in world football for no better reason than Ferguson having decided he was the man for the job, quite what Ferguson’s credentials are when it comes to recruiting personnel for senior management positions at any club remain a mystery. The fact remains, however, Moyes is at OT on a 6 year contract and would as such prove extremely expensive to remove so early in his tenure.
So, do they keep faith in him and back him to succeed with transfer funds based on nothing more than the wise man from Govan’s intuition… or do they remind themselves that he (Ferguson), for all his managerial brilliance, was also responsible for signing a fair whack of dross on the playing side, and may well have repeated the feat in his first attempt at recruiting the clubs most important employee?
If the Glazers do come to the conclusion that Moyes is out of his depth, then it gets complicated. Ferguson is not going to enjoy having his boy (and judgement) suffering the hugely embarrassing situation of being binned after a mere few months, which may well open up a split at boardroom level – never a good thing at any club.
The next problem is, of course ,money. Moyes, it has been reported, was brought to OT on a 6 year contract, coughing that up in severance pay would undoubtedly break a few Glazer hearts, but that is just the tip of the iceberg…
Should Moyes get the old tin tack then he, obviously, needs to be replaced – starting the whole circus afresh. The next man to come in is going to take a look at what is, in all honesty, a severely limited squad and declare that in order to compete with City, Chelsea and a resurgent Arsenal he needs to strengthen the team in every important area - at a cost of circa. £120 million. What happens then? Give this new, as yet unproven, manager the money he asks for and watch him then piss it up the wall a la Mancini, Dalglish or AVB? Or decide that he needs to first prove himself with a team that were after all League Champions only 12 months ago - leading to an inevitable further slide towards mediocrity?
Man United need to get this right or their official partners and Asian replica shirt buyers will follow market demands and start looking elsewhere -whist their direct league sporting rivals become Everton, Aston Villa and Newcastle.
I’d love to be able to say that I sympathise with them for the situation they find themselves in - but I’d be lying through my feckin teeth
