Things have certainly changed haven't they. 10 years ago we would sign a cast off from a better team and claim him the new messiah, 5 years ago we would panic buy in January, 3 years ago we would pay a massive premium because we couldn't guarantee CL football.
Now United manage all 3 in one fell swoop.
Don't get me wrong, he is clearly a decent player, but United appear to be the only suitors and he doesn't feature regularly for his present side. Seems they have paid well over the odds. He gets no more game time in a comparable side than Milner and plays in a similar role to Januzai, Rooney and Kagawa. Does this signal the end of traditional wing play at United, in which case Young , Valencia and Nani seem all a bit surplus, what did that trio cost?
Suddenly the "we don't need to spend, we have a great squad, we bring our own players through" argument is replaced by a wankfest of " watch out the spending doesn't end here" and "It's great to see us spending like a big club"
Can't have it both ways and if United are now set on a rebuilding program they are going to find out that can no longer automatically attract top talent at discount prices. They simply aren't the draw they once were. The party is officially over.
