I saw Herrera playing for Spain at the Olympics. Was far and away there best player. Better than Alba, Mata or Javi Martinez. Think he will be a very good signing for them. They only need another 7 or 8 and they will be able to compete for a Europa spot.

Herrera is really good, one of the best midfielders not called up by Spain. But maybe the sort of player they should have called up. He is pretty complete (can pass, tackle, shoot) and has the upside to become a top class player.

He isn't a signing that instantly strikes fear into my heart, something United had been promising with all the big names linked. But this is more of a Ferguson style signing, someone on the periphery of stardom who will give 100% and work hard in the system.

He's twice as good as any central midfielder at United so is an upgrade, but they do need a few more signings. I don't think they need as much as people claim as a good coach can get more out of players they have, like Van Gaal is doing with Holland. United's front line is good on paper, just needs the tactics. Most of their money now should go on defensive players and they will be good for a top 3 challenge considering they will have a stress-free season without Champions League.

Herrera is bound to be included in the Spain team if he signs for the rags.

It's been happening for years. Remember Dennis Irwin? As soon as he left Boundary Park for the swamp, he was immediately called up to the Ireland squad.

Same with Stan, Chris Smallthing and Wellshite; they wouldn't be anywhere near the England squad if they played for another club.

in van gaal they have a manager who knows what hes doing, hes no moyes that's for sure,i expect united to be in the top 3 this coming season, behind us and chelsea

Betfair have them at 6/1 3rd favourites, must admit i`m shocked by that.

I would put them around lucky to maybe just get 4th, and i mean very lucky.

With LVG in charge i just can't see them in the same mess they found themselves in last season

He is a lot more tactically aware than Moyes, and despite having a mediocre squad, they will be a lot better tactically

Don't see them finishing above us or Chelsea, regardless of who they sign, but I can see them challenging Arsenal and Liverpool for 3rd and 4th

Also RVP will be fit the whole season and he is a class player unlike Rooney

Yep, he will take off under LVG in my opinion. Probably a good shout for topscorer, but they won't win anything again.

LVG has got a big job on his hands even without european football, this lad they have signed from Bilbao looks a decent player but isn't the answer to their problems in midfield

A good manager again, piss easy start to the season which will give them confidence, a summer spending spree, no European football (Liverpool went from 7th to 2nd with this advantage), no pressure from the media (they will not be expected to win the league)....... seriously, it would be a HUGE shock if they are not challenging for the title again next season. They couldn't possibly have it laid out any easier for them.

They still need at least five top class players - CB(2 would be better), RB, LB, CMx2. Also if they're jetting off to these lucrative friendlies in the Middle and Far East the advantage of no European football will be diminished.

Herrera is a good little signing, however I’d imagine it’s only the start with regards to reinforcing their woeful midfield.

IMO, there is absolutely no doubt LVG will be bringing in a number of other players – they simply have to, however as LoveCity mentioned earlier, I don’t believe they need as many as some people on here are making out.

LVG is a master tactician, something which Moyes clearly isn’t and never will be. He’s won 3 out of 3 in the World Cup with midfielders that wouldn’t get into any of the top sides in European football (De Jong, De Guzman, past-it Sneijder etc) . With that in mind, I struggle to see how LVG couldn’t get United finishing higher up the league than 7th, and that’s even with last year’s team. By bringing in a few more quality players, no European distractions, a fairly-kind start to the campaign and with someone in charge who knows his football, I find it almost impossible to see United finishing outside the top 4.

Liverpool finished 2nd last season by relying on a great strikeforce, the odd moment of quality from Coutinho, a solid season from Gerrard and the emergence of Sterling. The rest of their team, let’s face it, is not much kop (excuse the pun). If LVG can get RVP playing top form again (which is likely), get Mata more involved in an around him, develop Januzaj more, and bring in a couple of solid defenders/midfielders (along with Herrera), then as a team it would be no worse than that Liverpool side, and quite probably better (depending on who they bring in). LVG is also an upgrade on Rodgers. The other real challenge for LVG is whether he can get Rooney back to his best.

3 or 4 top class signings on top of Herrera and I don’t see why they couldn’t challenge. It’s just a question of who they bring in. I can’t see all these names they’re being linked with arriving, but it’s not going to stop with Herrera that’s for sure.
