Old Trafford: Champions League 'Vital' For United's Future

Manchester United's owners have piled the pressure on new boss Louis van Gaal by stressing the potential financial perils of failure to qualify for the UEFA Champions League for a second consecutive season.

After David Moyes' dismal reign as manager at Old Trafford last term the club find themselves without European football for the first time since 1995, and a prospectus released by the club highlights the dangers of failing to re-establish themselves in the top four at the first time of asking.

The document also revealed that the highly-publicised 10-year kit deal with adidas is dependent on results and will drop 30 per cent from £75million to £52.5m if the club fail to qualify for the Champions League in two consecutive seasons.

The news comes as the Glazer family, who own the club, are set to draw out £89m by reducing their shareholding in the club to 85%.

The prospectus says: 'Because of the prestige associated with participating in the European competitions, particularly the Champions League, failure to qualify for any European competition, particularly for consecutive seasons, would negatively affect our ability to attract and retain talented players and coaching staff, as well as supporters, sponsors and other commercial partners.

'Failure to participate in the Champions League for two or more consecutive seasons would also reduce annual payments under the recently announced agreement with adidas by 30 per cent of the applicable payment for the year in which the second or other consecutive season of non-participation falls.'

United's combined broadcasting and matchday revenue from Europe has fallen in the last three years from £59.7m in 2011 to £38.9m in 2013.
What will it be this year then.a big fat zero

I don't think its coincidence that the Glazers have decided to sell more shares now.

They could just be filling their pockets, but that'd be a bit like selling some of the family silver, they are missing out on some income while they own the club and value when (if) they come to sell it. Maybe they need it for other parts of their business empire. Most likely though, it's the famous war-chest.

They must be well aware of how much money they will lose out on if United don't make top 4 next season. It could even have knock on effects and mean missing out for years to come. I suspect LVG went there on the understanding that once he'd had a good look at the existing players he could spend big if he said they needed it. No surprise to anyone that they need it.

I expect the Vidal rumours to be true. Fingers crossed though he can't get his hands on any decent CB's.

Old Man Glazer died a few weeks ago. Could it just be that one of his 6(?) kids isn't so interested in the football business and wants some of his or her share paid out ?

More detailed reports of this share sale say the cash is going right in the glazers back pocket bud.
The only chest those notes will see is a strippers.

A serious question to ask, out of the 200m utd have in their warchest , how much have they spent?

This transfer window their net spend is £47,700,000

I don't think you will see anymore now barring some unknown lad for 3mil or so.
They have been given roughly 30m a season in the last few years and this season due to being shit have been given another 20m i reckon.

This is a crucial period for the rags for sure.Ourselves,Chelsea,Arsenal and the dippers have all strengthened from a position of strength, the rags have lost a fair few world class players and are having to rebuild from a terrible season AND replace almost half a team and hope they gell.

If they don't make the top four this season Van Perie and Rooney will be a year older and slower and will they stick around with no champions league football for another season? As stated their revenue and sponsorship will drop steeply and it could tip them over the edge to mid table obscurity. Here's hoping!

Last October they announced to the NYSE that they intended to put another bunch of shares on the market but soon decided against it because the share price went through the shitter. They've revived their interest now because the share price is running high. Their shopping mall empire must need more shoring up with a few extra millions to fund each of their lavish Florida lifestyles. Not one penny will be given to the club to spend.

And will another club buy shrek, considering his huge salary?

I doubt it very much.
