Soccer-Nike to end kit supply deal with Man Utd - source

LONDON, July 7 (Reuters) - U.S. sportswear company Nike will not renew a long-running kit supply deal with English soccer club Manchester United because of the cost of a new contract, a source with knowledge of the negotiations said.

Nike has been supplying United's famous red shirts since 2002 but the current agreement expires next year. Its withdrawal is expected to clear the way for the club to sign a lucrative new deal with German sportswear company Adidas.

"Clearly Nike's football business is booming and they could easily afford to do this (deal). They had the right to match any other offer but looking at the deal on the table, they will walk away as it doesn't make commercial sense," the source said.

United got around 38 million pounds ($64.7 million) from the Nike deal in 2012-13, including its share of profit from the sale of merchandise around the world.

Media reports had suggested the club was looking for a new deal worth around 60 million pounds per season.

Nike and Adidas are battling for supremacy in the soccer kit industry, with the American company having made big inroads into a sport that its German rival long dominated.

United, owned by the American Glazer family, are looking to rebuild after a disappointing season in which the 20-times English champions finished only seventh in the Premier League.

The club has installed Dutchman Louis van Gaal as their new manager and he will take charge after the World Cup where he has steered the Netherlands to the semi-finals.

Now that this is confirmed, surely it weakens United's hand in negotiating a new deal.

Confirmed.

I think that's why Nike it, the last FU to Man U..

RAGs want the money so have to lower the Brand Prestige.. Warrior? HaHa! beginning of the end.

Adidas now frontrunners for #mufc kit deal. Will break all records. Nike blown out of the water it seems

Adam Crafton @AdamCrafton_ · 38m

Could be worth around £750m to #mufc over a decade with Adidas

Adidas are awful with their stripes and brand pimping.

But City are Nike's biggest club in England. Enjoy lads!

If they get Adidas they will be Adidas's 3rd biggest club behind Bayern and Real Madrid already in their stable.

Surprised by Nike because they don't have many top clubs left in their stable..

If Man United get Adidas expect them to be linked with Messi who's also Adidas :o

Adidas clearly don't see it like that if there willing to pay more than what bayern/real put together for united.

That might and should help us get a bigger contract out of them.

I am pretty sure City will be looking to get the biggest shirt deal they can in the next year or so and I think we might see advertisment on sleeves like Barcelona have done.

Training gear will be looking for sponsorship no doubt as well.

A new precedent is being set from their kit + sponsorship deals and all top clubs will now want deals at least within touching range of their's. For example, Arsenal's Puma deal is half of what United's Adidas deal is going to be.

We're making around £52m/year from Etihad (the apparently inflated and unfair deal that ALSO covers a stadium + training campus) + Nike compared to about £135m/year they will be getting from Adidas and that car firm. Etihad deal needs pushing up to at least £60m per year and the Nike deal to in the £30m vicinity if renegotiations are possible.

Hopefully the Glazers revert to pocketing the profits once United are back in the top 4 or their spending (not "buying success" of course) is going to blow everyone else's away.

If they get Adidas it will be better . I hate having the same brand as these wan*** .
