They have basically regressed to where they were before Ferguson arrived. They had loads of money then , and constantly threw it around at the latest big thing hoping for a short-cut to success.

Ferguson realised they were a basket case and took four years to weed out the drinking culture and install some kind of order. They then spent an unprecedented amount at the time on the core of their side that won the title a couple of years later, Palister (£2.3m) Ince (£1.8m) Webb (£1.5m) Hughes (£1.9m) etc etc

The problem they have now is that no club is going to give a manager the time to sort out their problems and install a proper structure to their organisation.

The only hope they have is if they install a director of football model and give this man the time to build a squad regardless of who the manager is.

Until then we can pull up a seat and enjoy the show, it will be at least three or four years before they can compete with us on an even footing even if they sack TT now and install the right personnel straight away.

What they will do is appoint the next big name manager and hope that he brings them instant success.

I can easily see Mourinho going there soon. Not that he'd turn things around, if anything I think they'd worsen.

As I keep saying, let them scrape into fourth every year and then get humiliated in the CL before Xmas, year in, year out. Also secures jobs and contracts in Manchester [hotels and so on].

It's the beginning of AN end, but I doubt it's the beginning of THE end. United are too rich, too influential, too well supported, to fall far from the upper echelons. In fact I doubt they'll have another "Moyes" season for a fair while. Equally I don't see them winning the title until someone behind the scenes either changes the philosophy (that philosophy being "fourth will do") or employs a Director of Football who has a clear, concise plan for how the club will approach the on field side of things.

Van Gaal si 1,000 times worse than Ferguson, as far as his dictatorial style goes. Ferguson wanted things his way, and was ruthless in getting what he wanted. He was a selfish, opinionated, callous man, however there's enough people he worked with/around who say nice things about him for me to believe he had his good qualities. He nurtured youth players, he gained the respect and loyalty of many players. Van Gaal seems to have none of Ferguson's "people skills" and all of his "my opinion is the only one that matters" attitude. Van Gaal will be a (comparative) failure at United. He'll not win the title with them, he'll not be able to build a coherent side, and he'll be gone in 12 to 24 months.

I agree that the rags aren't going away. And this is a good thing - the league wouldn't be nearly as interesting without the bad guys. However, by the time they get themselves back in order, we'll have been elevated to the top table with Barcelona, Real and Bayern. They'll be permanently too far behind us by that point.
