That and the change in ruling about ticket money, yep. Although they did a great job of turning their club into a commercial whore in the 90s as well.

Edit: Regards your question they pretty much sold the club and used the money received to buy trophies.

I think this is right - they created additional shares and sold them.

Of course Sky owned a chunk until 1999 (I think) and the two were a symbiote to whore Star TV in the far east. That got the sponsorships rolling.

This is something their fans will never get. During their 'glory years' they could outspend anyone in the league, by a long long way. Other clubs were broke in comparison, they basically had a free run. Now, every PL club has world class players making it harder to win, we are now restricted by FFP and more.

Yet they still harp on now about, ooh, comeback when you have 20 like us..... They sound exactly like the 'history boys' they once mocked.

I gave up discussing football with rags long ago.

You mean the club's shareholders invested their own capital in the club in an expectation of getting a return down the line?

Keane has laid in to Young for his diving! I have some level of respect for Keane in that he speaks his crazy mind, he can’t stop himself from sticking the knife in. A lot of Rags fans have completely turned on him even though he must have been there most successful captain of all time.
