I think the current hike in cost of players was instigated by United re Lukaku.

Initial offer was around 50M, this was matched by Chelsea so United immediately upped the bidding to its final level. It does not help their financial cause for concern when they give their purchases massive salaries as well rather than giving rises dependant on performance like City are doing now.

Perhaps he is having a go at United´s player purchase methods ?
