United thread 2017/18

I can see United breaking the summer transfer window total spend records - either they do that or mid table mediocrity beckons.

De Gea - surely this year Real will snag him
Lindelof - Their Mangala
Blind - sidelined
Luke Shaw - broken
Darmian - sidelined
Valencia - on last legs
Carrick - gone
Pogba - fallen out
Fellaini - going
Young - on last legs
Sanchez - Getting slower and slower
Martial - pissed off (had his entire AMNumber branding ready to go, when he lost that number IIRC)
Lingard - will follow his dab partner to the ends of the earth
Rashford - dicked about with
Ibrahimovic - going

So even if some of that doesn't occur, they're going to need to replace almost an entire starting 11 just to stand still.

Looking at their recent history of incoming transfers:
https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/manchester-united/alletransfers/verein/985
..it's a pretty dire the amount of short term churn in the previous 4 seasons

14/15
Di Maria - gone
Shaw - dead and buried
Herrera
Rojo
Savic - gone + Who?
Blind - sidelined
Falcao - crocked and then playing better when he left

15/16
Martial - not happy
Schneiderlin - moved on
Depay - moved on
Darmian - sidelined
Schweinsteiger - moved on

16/17
Pogba - not a happy haircut
Mkhitaryan - moved on
Bailly
Ibrahimovic - let go/moved on

That's an abysmal hit rate (similar to ours on 'misses' 12/13 to 14/15 https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/manchester-city/alletransfers/verein/281 )

Good post. They have been “rebuilding” for years now.

They will spend £200m minimum. They could spend more and be like Milan which had many many new players that failed to gel.

Shaw, Fellaini, Carrick, Darmian, Zlatan all leaving. Like you said they will need to spend crazy amounts just to stand still and replace these players.

The gouger looks to be begging for the sack to get his pay off. Would love to see Spurs knock them out of the FA cup which could be the final blow.

Also consider that they have overachieved this season in the league.

Matic, Mata, and Sanchez will turn 30 this year. Young and Valencia both turn 33 in the summer. Their defense is bad and masked by their player of the season for the nth year running De Gea. Hopefully he finally smartens up and moves on to bigger and better things.

Smalling, Lindelof, Jones, Rojo, Blind all range from terrible to average. Bailly is good from time to time.

Can see one of Martial or Rashford, maybe even both looking to move to get more game time.

Best thing is they are stuck with Sanchez for another 4 years!! Wonderful.

Valencia and Young as full backs.

We know what happened when we had Zabba and Kolarov as our first choice fullbacks after they had passed their prime.

I quite rate Blind. He is an intelligent player nullified by two dinosaurs that have managed him there.

He'd be a useful squad player here as he covers positions we are light in.

Despite him having 5 transfer windows already I am sure the "rebuilding" will be mentioned a lot and they will spend heavily. They will probably recoup a lot on players like Shaw as there are always mugs who are happy to take cast offs from the Rags but it will be another rebuilding summer for the 6th window he has had.
