In my opinion, they have a lot of work ahead of them to build something competitive either domestically or in Europe. Certainly they have the financial muscle to compete but sporting wise, they lack not only a coherent vision/plan but the infrastructure/organization to pull it off.
The arrogance is so endemic that the perception continues to be that their financial clout alone will make them attractive to any young talent in the market. Unless they are English or grew up ManYoo fans, the thinking is steeped in delusion. Currently there are no less than 10-12 big clubs who have sporting projects much further along than United and will continue to have an edge over your city rivals.
They indeed need a DoF, someone to put together a plan in concert with the coach to ensure continuity in their long-term goals. Any flux in that paradigm will only serve to destabilize them further
The positives for them is that they are awash in cash and have assets they can put on the market to rebuild or strengthen but highly predicated on having that coherent vision in place else it'll be a step forward and two back like previous years. Their biggest issue is shedding themselves of that enormous salary burden from Alexis Sanchez and I can only see a loan to possibly mitigate that. Yet, who would do that? PSG? Can't see how that would work out but perhaps if they can somehow circumvent FFP further
The negatives is that United can't simply throw cash at any & every target they desire on the market. One, potential targets know full well they get only bumper wages coming to a project that has been saddled with uncertainty for several years now. Two, those same targets can get similar wages & exposure going to any of 10-12 others on the market who can provide better sporting options.
