Fair comment. It is widespread obsession. Used to be how big the gate was, now it's how many empty seatsactually I’m just pointing out their hypocrisy. Personally couldn’t give a shit about empty seats but they seem to be obsessed with it.
I agree that Utd's are suspect. No two sets of figures match exactly. The police should be quoting how many people actually go through the turnstile. The clubs should quote two sets of figures - 1) how many tickets sold 2) How many of the tickets sold actually turn up. All clubs know how many fans go thru the gates. A friend who is a season ticket holder at Utd told me years ago that the club put them under pressure to turn up. I don't have a problem with fans being put under a bit of pressure to turn up if they have season tickets, although i understand the argument that they are free to do what they like, i don't support this point of view. Quite easy to have a small amount of tolerance, but i'd have something along the lines of 5 strikes and you ticket is pulled, and it goes for reallocationYet the media bang on about our shortfall in attendances at every opportunity but very rarely do so for any other club. You only have to look at the recent press articles about City allegedly overstating the attendances for last season's games against Liverpool (by 5,500) and Spurs (by 8,500) when that's clearly incorrect. One in six seats empty for the Spurs game and one in ten for the Liverpool game? I don't think so. The same articles stated that the GMP's figures for attendances at Old Trafford now miraculously agree with United's own official attendances down to the last spectator when only a few years ago they exposed United for persistently overstating their attendances by many thousands.
