I'm 64 and I've never heard about this - honestly.
The only explanation I have ever known is that it is a derogatory term, equating them to a soiled womens' sanitary towel - they play in the same colour as a jam-rag. (Terribly sorry to be so impolite.) That's also the explanation offered on Blue Moon several years ago, and, I've only ever heard it in the last decade or 2.
Whatever the truth of this, it's immaterial; they're scum - pure and simple.
That’s a myth invented by some blue wags in the modern era of social media.

If it helps….

Manchester United's own fans gave them the nickname 'The Rags' in the 1920s. It came about as the club was in such a dire financial situation at the time that they could not even afford to buy new kit and would often turn out wearing kit that was years old, tatty and looked like rags.
You are so nice I was going to take him down the bad route :-)

I know we've recently lost our Head of State but whoever's in charge of the housekeeping round here hasn't posted Fatty's Lament for a while, so on the basis you can never have enough rag tears...

I live in hope that when Haaland scores his 30th league goal of the season, with weeks to spare, he'll lose it and do the sequel... 'Might as well be Kris Boyd'

This reminds me ... saw Howson mention the other day he knows where the famous OT banner is -> its stored away at one of the United supporter group high muckety-muck's house. Howson figures we'll see a similar banner at the Etihad should United's drought reach 10 yrs.
They are not relevant enough to warrant one. Anyway, they'd probably fluke their way to the league cup the season we put it up. The scousers though, just for the match - with a few reminders of their dodgy past....
