They bought van Persie to win the league and they did. In the long term it's probably debatable as whether or not it was a successful signing. There was a time when making a reasonably priced signing and you won a league title was regarded as a success.
Well yeah, but it's an example of the short-term thinking that has plagued the club since then.

When did they sign Phil the face?
Baconface signed him, I think. Which is insane when you think about the fact that he only left them last summer.

He did an awful job of succession planning. He bought players like Jones, Smalling, Nani, Ashley Young, Valencia, Anderson, Hargreaves, etc, to be the long-term replacements, but by 12/13, he was relying on running his aging squad of players into the ground because none of those signings were up to scratch, including bringing Paul Scholes out of retirement.

Would you even count van Persie in that bracket? Played well for a season and won them the title, but then reverted to his usual crocked self. 26 league goals in his first season, then only 22 in the following two combined.

There's a reasonable argument that the last great transfer window was the 05/06 window when they brought in Vidic, Evra, van der Sar and Park. Since then, you could only point to Carrick (06/07), De Gea (11/12) and Shaw (14/15) as players that have had a long-term role in the first team at a fairly high level.
Whereas our list of poor signings is as short as their list of good signings!

City's recruitment is amazing actually
