His "something " was having the governing body and the referees in his pocket. Didn't he wine and dine a ref (Webb??) The evening before an important game?

That is the root cause of recent animosity. United fans would kill to have similar ownership and it hurts them everyday that their local rivals have what they yearn for deep down.

I've seen it said that Rashford was proof about United promoting youth.

No it wasn't. Rashford only got a chance because of injuries. At the time, the rags were moaning/making excuses that they had no choice but to play him, as they had nobody else.
After they match (which he did well), they then give the narrative that it was all by design!

Clough was able to make that purchase because in those days the away gates were split, and promoted clubs could take a punt, which he did astutely. Not long after that the big boys voted to keep the home gate money, and no promoted club has won the championship.
