Clough was able to make that purchase because in those days the away gates were split, and promoted clubs could take a punt, which he did astutely. Not long after that the big boys voted to keep the home gate money, and no promoted club has won the championship.
Yes and which cub pushed hardest for the change.
Clue.

They had just started to redevelop the ground and could see once it was tge biggest they had the chance to make a lot more money

You know what I find disgusting is that utd get to have some of their players in the England team. Just because they are utd. They just dont deserve it and the media picking the england squad really has wound me up over the years.

Mainoo ffs. There are so many better and MORE consistent players playing for lesser teams in the PL

yes...but..Forest smashed the world transfer record for a goal keeper when buying peter shilton....around 4 games into the 1st Division season..after being promoted the season before. They had just lost at Highbury Arsenal ,John Middleton making a couple of errors, England under 21 keeper....but not up to Clough or former goal keeper himself Peter Taylor's required level.

That was a very important purchase, when Forest had won very little..
Promotion and the old Anglo Cup......Shilton turned that Forest defence into a mean machine, and his two world Class saves from big Mick Ferguson's headers at Highfield road ,Coventry on the penultimate day of the season ,were instrumental in ensuring Forest were champions that season. Clough himself said Shilton was worth between 12 and 14 points for forest that season...

If that's not buying success, then I don't know what is ;)

Edit: but Ferguson definitely had unlimited funds from day one at utd.
Pallister Danny Wallace, Paul ince, etc etc.
...Birtles, Davenport, Veron

To be fair he's been consistent as it looks as if he's taken Man U out of Europe as well .View attachment 119853
He pays tax in Monaco. He bought into a club that pays tax in the Caiman Islands. Ineos pays tax in the Isle of Man. But he wants UK taxpayer money to build a new stadium. Seems fair.

Well if waistcoat IS after the rags jub, he needs to keep well in with 'em.

I've seen it said that Rashford was proof about United promoting youth.

No it wasn't. Rashford only got a chance because of injuries. At the time, the rags were moaning/making excuses that they had no choice but to play him, as they had nobody else.
After they match (which he did well), they then give the narrative that it was all by design!
I was also told by someone who knew their youth set up that there was a better option ahead of him but that bloke had chosen to go out on loan to get 1st team football. However, Rashford took his chance. If he wasn't fast he'd be nothing - I genuinely believe that, not just the Blue tinted specs. I have absolutely no idea why anyone, even a Rag, would even consider him world class.
