God knows, I've grown to detest Arsenal in the last few seasons. Wretched club, manager, players and fans. But they were royally shafted in that game. Absolutely horrendous refereeing. I'd love Howard Webb to watch that game back, and apply today's rules to it.
Old mother didn't apply the rules at the time, if a current whistling wanker watched it now it'd still be the same with few legitimate decisions given.

Thats a bit crass tbh
Agreed, I thought a few times before posting it, I'm not totally comfortable with having done. However, Cardiff arranged that flight on the cheap and it feels like united want to do everything that way now, so the comparison stands even if it's a horrible one. I hope that all goes well for them in terms of the journey.

The rules from back then just need to be applied properly. They would have ended with 8 players.

Agree.

I've seen loads of people saying it was never a penalty, but I don't think I've seen any saying why. Just 'never a pen', 'games gone', and 'var shouldn't overturn that'.

First replay I'd seen you can see De Ligt misses the ball and makes contact with Ings' shin. Why shouldn't it be a penalty?
I'm in the never a pen camp and for me the issue is that none of the players in the area of where the ball lands makes a good attempt to win it / control it. So you can't really say anyone player has it and another player is making the challenge. Ings comes in with more momentum than anyone else and if anything he is committing a fowl on de ligt as much as the other way around. Its just a collision of players none of whom win the ball. If the ref had given a fowl to the rags no one would be talking about it.

If that's given against us we'd all go mad.

that has been given against us, against palace last year, foden went to clear the ball, missed and caught the player and a pen was given, there was no media outrage, no criticism of var, just criticism of foden for a foolish challenge, whether you think its a pen or not, de ligt has caught the man and not the ball as hes gone to clear it and im not sure what the outrage is as to why that is not a pen, by the same token we should have got a pen against arsenal when akanji was rugby tackled nowhere near the ball, where was the same outrage for that not being given, thats right there was none, its selective outrage because of the team and carefully placed to deflect from the fact that even if it hadnt been given the rags would have eeked out ANOTHER draw against a poor side, but the media will always change the narrative.
