I'm probably wrong but wasn't there rumours at the time that the Portuguese club that he was 'playing' for were offering him to the rags for cheaper than 7m, but for some odd reason (ho-ho!) Gill and the Pisscan insisted on paying over the odds for him?
I know the Pisscan admitted he'd never heard of him before and only met him the day before he signed.

His transfer should have been looked into a little more thoroughly.

So the story with the Bebe signing was that it included a big payment as a thank you to a certain Portuguese agent who caught wind that a certain Portuguese winger - who may or may not have been taking PEDs at the time -was going to get drug tested and warned a certain Portuguese assistant manager so they pulled him out of the squad with a shoulder injury for a while (maybe he did injure it moonlighting as a Michael Jackson impersonator, who knows?)
