And yeah our hands are kinda tied. If we didn't want the Americans to use Fairford then we'd have been slowly pushing them out. But we're not because it's our benefit to be on good terms with them.

One example of that is that we don't have enough F35s to have a full compliment on our aircraft carriers. So the US provides aircraft to make up the shortfall.

It's a complicated subject but I think if you put yourself in Iran's shoes getting battered daily by Israeli and American airstrikes some of which are flying from the UK. Then to me we are clearly part of thei enemy.

We're not their first (oil infrastructure) , second (Israel), third (local US airbases) or fourth (US Navy assets) targets but I think we're on their 'hit list'. The Faslane attempted break in was their way of telling us that.

Agree It’s complicated as you say we haven’t spent enough money on our armed forces for decades relying on the US to make up the shortfall in services since 1944.
It makes me feel better knowing it’s the Americans using the base since 1944 and not the UK bombing Iran but Iran won’t see it like that we are still in the frame.
 
Trump is doing exactly what he was put in place to do. Start a war in the middle east, possibly dragging the rest of the world in, crash econimies by disrupting if not stopping entirely the flow of oil completely. He was elected on the promise to do completely the opposite, in other words he's a psychopathic liar. Who'd have guessed lol?

Finally got round to buying a kindle and wished I’d done this years ago.

Struggle with low light reading at night hence knocking books on the head and the kindle has been transformative.

Will put this on my list - thanks for sharing (and the myriad other recommendations you share!!)

That isn't literally true. The 1945 Labour government spent vast sums of money (and more importantly, foreign exchange) in a vain attempt to pretend that we were still a first-rate power. This is why conscription continued until 1960, even though the young men deployed would have been better used in industry, which was desperately short of labour. (One reason for high levels of immigration, by the way.)

We even stepped up our expenditure because the Yanks wanted us in Korea, and then pressured us to rearm. For years, we maintained expensive garrisons in sundry dusty outposts and colonies, to no obvious advantage for the people of the UK.

It was much later that we started on cutbacks, first because it dawned on us that the Empire was gone, later because of the fall of the USSR.

Modern defence equipment is outrageously expensive, and we spend a disproportionate amount on nuclear bombs - the equivalent of a bee's sting, only to be used once and fatal to the bee if used. National defence relies on partnership with allies. Fortunately, the European ones are reliable.

He hasn’t been ousted because the GOP refuses to investigate, impeach and convict despite ample evidence of activity that justifies it, and because his lickspittle cabinet and VP who owe their jobs/power solely to him won’t ever invoke the 25th Amendment. Their primary focus is fealty and self-protection, not their duty and oaths of office which are supposed to protect the nation and its people.

We need to understand that Iran, Russia, and their allies have thousands of propaganda accounts on social media aimed at spreading anti-Western misinfo, which is clearly working.
