US Politics Thread

It's very surprising to me that a US debt payment compromise has reached this stage - will the compromise actually pass?

It might, but I think McCarthy might suffer as a consequence.
It's an odd one. I was convinced that they would drag this out to the last and even gone over the edge. The modern GOP specialises in tearing stuff down and general shithousery.

Politically it would have been a very bad move but when has that ever stopped them.

And what does McCarthy think he can achieve doing grown up politics when you are on the side of Trump and the Freedom caucus?

Biden played an absolute blinder. He initially said he wouldn't negotiate which then gave McCarthy the illusion of 'victory' when he 'forced' Biden to the table. Biden meanwhile was always prepared to negotiate from the off. Once McCarthy believed he had the upper hand, Biden could then pretty much sneak in all the concessions he was looking for and McCarthy and Co would still think they were getting the better deal.

I dont see what is in this for McCarthy. It's lose lose. He has achieved very little and given the nutters another stick to beat him with.
