It makes you wonder why the circa 20 Jim Jordan hold outs felt empowered to block his bid bit were then happy for Mike Johnson to get the gig. Johnson has a full card of MAGA extremism to his name. Gatez referred to him as MAGA Mike.

There seems to be no logic to it.

I seem to recall Johnson favours aiding Ukraine so that may have been a factor. That and the knowledge they had to choose someone eventually and the choices weren’t great.

On the other hand they are all lunatics so who really knows.

Moderate Republicans probably calculated that voting for Johnson - while risky - is the best of various bad alternatives (e.g., side with Democrats and get primaried; reject MAGA candidates and get primaried and piss off voters in the general as the House continues to languish without a speaker). Moreover, Johnson, unlike Jordan, hasn't incurred the animus of fellow Congressmen.

Funding for Ukraine / Israel seems to be the next flash point. I've not seen anything on what maga Mike's views might be.

Seems a bit of a capitulation given the non magas are the majority. Maybe they think they still have some control as the rules that kicked out McCarthy could be used by his group to do the same to him.

It's a total capitulation because they needed SOMEone as blaming Democrats for the chaos wasn't working even among GOP supporters and no non-MAGA Republican was going to win so they chose a no-name MAGAs would support.

So now Democrats see a clear line to going after GOP congresspeople in Biden voting districts and holding them accountable for kowtowing to MAGA and supporting this little shit. Hence why so many are saying Johnson's election ensures the House flips blue in 2024.

Seems plausible.

As ive said before this chaos must be a disaster for your average GOP elected politician, state or federal, in terms of fundraising. They will sell themselves as part of a big well disciplined machine that you can pay to access and influence through fundraising events.

That system relies on the big established names touring these events and doing photo ops with the lower ranking party members and donors. To kill their own speaker and then ritually shame a few more candidates before picking a nobody is exactly how not to convince people to spend money. Some still will of course and some maga donor types might spend more. But the overall vibe is just a shit show.
