Something to do with Martin Luther King I think. Not complimentary.

Ah thank you, an interesting read and genuine food for thought

I dont think anybody in their right mind would be happy with that. Look at the animosity aimed at Blair for that very thing.

I'd also be surprised if many disagree with you when it comes to the US and their propensity for military and the amount they spend annually when so many of its citizens are at or below the poverty line. Not even starting on healthcare or education.

The problem becomes the way you frame your question. Its obviously a poor line and evryone should answer no. what point does that question serve?
The defense budget IS bloated -- I agree with Trump, let's pull out of NATO, you Euros never pay your fair share.

Seriously, what a piss poor nation with 9% of the population below the poverty line compared to 10% in Canada and 18% in the UK and 14% in France and 15% in Germany and 15% in Japan and 14% in Australia and . . . hey, wait a minute.

We could solve this if only we had 1 million more jobs available than workers, which would be the greatest gap in the history of the nation. Oh, what's that? We do?

It's true the education system is a mess, with America ranking a paltry 6th out of 195 countries in number of people with advanced degrees or vocational training, and two million folks a year from outside the US coming here for school given that 8 of the top 10 universities in the world are here (ask my kid how hard it is to get in).

Won't argue with you about healthcare, though :).

The defen(s)ce budget is bloated and can be wasteful, but nobody ever considers the number of civilian jobs that are directly and indirectly attributable to defence when considering the top level budget. Also, not forgetting the technological advances attributable to defence (communication, imagery, propulsion, automotive, materials...) which indirectly have a positive effect on the economy.

This is true of course but let it be said that I hope all recognize that I am being a bit sardonic and more than a bit tongue-in-cheek in response to SCS :)

To your point my father in law (as liberal a man as I know) worked at large “defense” companies as a composite materials scientist (how do we make weapons of war lighter?) but also worked on the Hubble telescope, a truly amazing window into space.

Sounds like a truly amazing guy.

The way I frame the question depends on how you take it as an individual. You can throw up your shoulders and and say 'what can you do?' or you can be increasingly fooked off by the supporters of a incrementalistic system that is reluctant on giving up or sharing power in any truly meaningful way towards equality and a more level playing field in society.

Whether you meant this as a way to have a dig, as you do usually, you've actually done me a favour as people will read your post where they'd have ignored mine.

Really.

I wonder if people who think they're helping can see themselves in Dr King's words?

No, in my opinion.

No, I don't think they can.

Take yer man, Foggy Brain, he 'celebrates' the poverty percentage in the "richest country in the world". He 'celebrates' a million jobs, but doesn't say how much those jobs are or why they are still available. Does he say why so many work pay cheque to pay cheque? No, cos he hasn't lived that life.

He is the epitome of MLK's derision as he votes Democrat.

You know that’s the not the issue. The US has plenty of people with good degrees but unfortunately around 40% of 16-18 year olds leave school thinking that creationism is a competing “theory” to evolution.

Mate -- name me one state that has banned the teaching of evolution.

The problem is the ears that are hearing, not the mouth that is talking.

He didn’t say that. The problem is the eyes aren’t reading.
Point is, the quality of K-12 education in the US varies wildly dependent on the local tax base that supplements the state funding of it. It's hard to generalize about.

Let's talk about the 40%. If one is an impressionable youngster confronted at home and at church with an alternate theory of the Creation and -- this is very important -- the fundamental belief that the Bible is literal truth (which, in my view, is the foundational belief of most all that eventually becomes evil in the USA) -- then I am not sure how the US education system can be blamed.

I don't think too many believe in creationism because a public schoolteacher was ordered to tell kids so.

Hey, did anyone ever entertain the idea that maybe MLK was, you know, wrong once in awhile? I mean, anyone other than Malcom X?

Just tossing it out there.

Somehow I vaguely recall one of the greatest filmmakers in history covering this topic in a brilliant film once.

None have banned the teaching of evolution and that’s not what I posted.

Sadly many States also teach creationism as a competing theory.

Can we switch topics for a sec and discuss the education system that created this group? :)

Believe me, this hits close to home — I’ve always been fascinated in how one can reconcile evolutionary theory and belief in God (Teilhard de Chardin’s works were a big focus of study of mine once).

I won’t deny the inanity of literal belief in “creationism” nor the idiocy of teaching it but we really can’t boil down generalizations about the alleged shittiness of the American educational system to this topic. It’s too narrow, and as I already stipulated, policy on curriculum is made at the state but also the local level.

Doing a bit of research, I can’t find a single state that mandates the teaching of creationism, or suggests they are equal in some way. Some state educational bureaucracies or local school boards have tried to do wonky things to discredit evolutionary theory but I think nearly all if not all attempts to push this issue have failed the Establishment clause test legally.

Creationism IS an alternate theory, and as long as there is discussion of the complete and utter lack of scientific proof for it, it probably should be mentioned schools. Mentioned — not taught.

Talking of education, i see De santis is threatening to withhold salaries of school officlas who violate his order banning school mask mandates.

Meanwhile Florida is at its highest 7 day average of new cases sice the beginning of the pandemic.

At what point does this level of deliberate negligence become criminal?

heard a ridiculous line - desantis has enabled the virus to be worse than it was when there was no vaccine.

He has to embrace whole hog lunatic cult ideology in all its illogical stupid evil fucked up extremes because it’s how he proves his Trump-handmaiden-in-waiting bonafides for 2024 to the cult members.

This is the natural path literal extremism takes.

Can you imagine what his chances would be to win the nomination if he “caved” to the “scientist elites” now?

Duuuuuuhhhhhhhhhh. :)

I'd be interested to know, however, whether there are places where they simply don't teach it because they don't want the hassle from Christian campaigning groups or parents who are creationists. Do you know if it's on the science syllabus everywhere?

Incidentally, it wouldn't be the only thing not on the syllabus. I remember watching a video with a science teacher complaining that relativity isn't on the syllabus. There's not time for everything.

For those that haven't blocked me and are brave enough to absorb another demographic's point of view, This quote above is EXACTLY why the WML is LOATHED by Dr King Jr, Black and working class people.

This post by a man who mixes in millionaire circles (a LITERAL champagne socialist), is a post smacking down the lived experiences of a Black man in Dr King and whitesplaning how wrong he was.

Honestly, how is it you're taken in by this UTTER fraud and, in fact, how he wasn't challenged on his post by his very own circle on here?

Usually, I'm not aghast about these posters, but this? This is utterly blatant.

Shame on you.

And I get the 'it's the way you phrase things' thrown at me?!

Nah, Bruh, I'm just off your slow-arsed-always-finding-ways-to-deviate train to equality.
