He can’t avoid debating her, and will. He will throw every meme, slur, trope at her he can.

Everything he ever did was “the best” and everything Biden or Harris has ever done is “the worst in history!”

He will have limited to no facts and it’ll all be hyperbolic BS for his core support.

She will have facts that will be quickly ignored as soon as Trump goes on his next rant.

There is zero chance Trump wins the presidency if the vote is made on substantive issues. None. But, that’s why he peddles in lies and hyperbolic nonsense, while making ridiculous assertions from the podium.

All of that said, Harris has yet to be tested, either by a challenging interview or in a debate where facts don’t matter. Those hurdles will be her litmus test.

Americans want a strong President. Biden showed that regardless of the job he had done, he didn’t look strong enough for the proverbial 3am emergency phone call or to stand up to our adversaries.

If Harris can show she not only has the brains for the job, but is no shrinking violet, then she stands a chance.

Her most difficult task, imho, is walking the tightrope of strong woman without being shrill, without coming across as “too black” (esp when she talks in front of black audiences), while standing up to Trump and the Right.

Sadly, none of that should matter, but politics is shallow and tropes and memes can sometimes make or break a candidate, even if those tropes and memes are misogynistic and racist.

Harris should be a formidable candidate, but she got no delegates in 2019 for a reason. Her and her team need to revisit those debates and those stump speeches and fix whatever wasn’t connecting, or she’ll get run over, rough shod and battered in the process.

Trump is a stupid, unintellectual stain on the American presidency, BUT he has shown that if he repeats the lies millions of people believe (or even think might be true), he has no upside limit with that kind of voter. We, as a country, have to hope that limit exists, esp in the states where it will matter most.

We are long since past the time when the Electoral College should have been retired, but that will never happen if Republicans have their way. They can read the demographic shifts as well as the next person, and the EC is their only real hope of the presidency.

Accordingly, Harris doesn’t just have to beat Trump, she has to beat an EC stacked against her. She could win the national vote by 10,000,000 votes and still lose if she loses just one state by just 1 vote…and this Supreme Court, as it did for George Bush Jr, is unlikely to lift a finger to help Harris overcome that 1 vote.

I hope she is preparing a main stump speech, with other speeches on the major issues, because she is a virtually unknown national figure and needs to assuage any potential concerns about her being a lightweight.

Lastly, she needs to not always be on the defensive and needs to preemptively attack Trump, his presidency and his overall behavior. Trump’s biggest weapon is stealing your thunder with his own, aimed at you! If you can be first to the punch, attack him where it hurts, and get him to respond, now YOU have the upper hand. If she can steal that oxygen while being strong on the issues, she can defeat him handsomely. That is a tall order that will require discipline and not listening to the risk averse Septuagenarians and Octogenarians who think they know better.

This is going to be a UFC Cage Match and jab, jab, jab ain’t gonna cut it!!
 
The polls seem to suggest Trump has maximised the share that he will get. He’s had their conference and an assassination attempt without any kind of increase to his vote share.

Very well summed up. A lot of people seem to think that being better than trump is a guarantee that Harris will beat him, but trump (and frankly social media too) has dragged the 'debate' into the gutter.
