US Politics Thread

Correct. And the opinion effectively washes its hands of the after-effects of the law on women, families and society. It’s a monstrously bad draft and this coming from a guy who personally has struggled with the abortion issue (morality-wise) for many years.

Talk about galvanizing women to show up at the polls. This is now a single-issue midterm election in the states, instantly, if women show up.
So weird how many Americans have issues with abortion. In the rest of the civilised world, it’s a non subject. Men generally don’t have an opinion as it’s not our bodies and usually none of our fucking business. I’ve genuinely never spoken to another adult male about their thoughts on abortion in the U.K.

Not having a go at you by the way, just very strange to me how it’s so politicised in the US.

It does seem likely to galvanise the Left though. Everyone appears to be going apoplectic

Not just Roe v Wade.

The way the leak argues its unconstitutional could be used for removing other laws.

The opinion specifically targets Griswold v. Connecticut (right to contraception) and Loving v. Virginia (legalising interracial marriage).

And the thing people need to realise is that there are Senators and Governors who have already raised these issues in public. It's not a strange biproduct of overturning Roe that no one will enforce, it's a deliberate attempt to destroy these protections nationwide so that nutjob states like Mississippi and Alabama can repeal everything and go back to 1930.

Why stop there? Surely Billy-Bob and Cletus should have the right to own slaves and hunt Native Americans?

I’ve lived here for over 20 years. The only and I do mean *only* reason I became a citizen in 2019, is so I could vote and at least know I did something against this headlong dive into theocratic authoritarianism that a third of the country are hell-bent on right now.
What gets me is the fact that the GoP has won the popular vote only once in the last 30 years but due to the electoral college and luck they’ve stacked the court 6:3 and are now about repeal a 50 year old law that has the support of 3 in 4 Americans.

And they lecture other countries about democracy. They really don’t know the meaning of the word.

Hypocrisy and shamelessness are their superpowers. They’re worse than fucking Tories.
