US Politics Thread

It's about time the US passed the aid package for Ukraine!

Out of curiosity - to gauge how Republicans feel about this - I read comments on an article about the aid package on Fox News.

Even on Fox News, where you'd expect most posters to be particularly partisan, the comments seem to have been evenly divided - 50% in favor, 50% opposed.

MAGA is finally losing its grip on the Republican Party. And I'd never in a million years have guessed that Mike Johnson would play a positive role in this outcome.
I don’t know about Maga losing their grip but it is certainly fraying at the edges. If Trump is convicted……

I do think that MAGA is losing its grip. It would have been unthinkable 2 months hence for the Speaker to go against Trump and advance a bill in support of aid for Ukraine.

I dont think an acquittal seems unlikely. It only takes 1 juror. Id say an acquittal is more likely
We'll see - I have faith in the jury.

I think it's going to be down to how well Cohen and Pecker (LOL - that's the guy's actual name!!!) hold up under cross and how well the Prosecution counters.

And then there's this...
Although, in an ideal world, each juror should simply consider the facts, ones feelings will almost inevitably come into play in any close decision. Trump, according to court reports, has been hostile in gesture/posture/apparent attitude/and indeed in at least one case - though this is forbidden - remarks, towards jurors as they were being vetted.

I’ll take that bet.
@Uncle Wally One Ball
In a typical US jury trial, all jurors must vote "guilty" for a conviction. Similarly, all jurors must vote "not guilty" for an acquittal.

Courts do their best to reach unanimous agreement - for obvious reasons.

If unanimity isn't reached, the court typically declares a mistrial. Prosecutors can bring the case once more if they wish.

Don't take SWP's bet!!! :-)

Assuming there is no rogue juror, a conviction on the accounts misdemeanour is likely. The harder charge to prove is the felony that it was done to affect the election. Punishment on the misdemeanour is likely a fine, but the felony carries serious prison time.

Even if found guilty of all 88 felonies, the chances of him ever seeing a cell are extremely low.

He’s 78 with rapidly advancing dementia, by the time the appeals process is completed, even if it wasn’t just home confident, his mental state will see him deemed unfit.

Against that, he runs the risk of being imprisoned even while the appeal is pending. He will pose a danger to witnesses, jurors and others at that time. That could persuade the judge not to grant bail pending the appeal. Even if granted bail, he is bound to break the terms such as no posting re witnesses and the bail could be revoked.
Surely they can find a way to lock this arse up! Please.

Agree but a rogue juror seems his best hope.

On the other hand if they hate him by the end of the trial and see him as a persistent BSer then the felony charge becomes more promising.

True, but it's American and they love locking up criminals. No guarantee he would get out pending an appeal.

Those young voters are going to come back and bite biden in the arse. Something like 92% now want him to take a different route and stop supporting Netanyahu. Well over 60% of Democrats too. They absolutely fuckin despise him.& they'll sit it out come November regardless if it hands it to Trump. Was watching a few of the independent YouTube channels with huge followers and their line of thinking along with most is it's a vote winner if he just stops going all in with Israel.

Amazing the weight the Israel lobby carries with US and UK politics. If it were Russia or any other nation for that matter it wouldn't be tolerated

It’s APRIL! College kids will be going home soon. Snowflakes will melt back into the background.

The vote for President is a BINARY CHOICE.

If you don’t vote for A, then you get B, regardless of your specific personal desires.

Biden is going to campaign based on:

Abortion Rights
Strong economy
On shoring of manufacturing
Infrastructure improvements
Steady hand vs Trump’s chaos
Democracy not Dictatorship

Trump is going to campaign on:

Border/Immigration
“Democracy & Patriotism” (??!!)
Stubborn inflation
Biden’s age & infirmity

Right now, the “anti-crowds” are developing their digital and media strategies for the summer & fall ad campaigns.

They can save their money on me. I would rather vote for a dead Biden than a living Trump. He is an existential threat to America as we have known it since 1870 and his constant reference to Nazi propaganda messages is chilling.

Don't fuckin kid yourself this won't effect him. Millions of American folk are seeing their tax dollars contribute to the murder of Tens of thousands of kids. They aren't all pro Israel like you.

I'm sure Aipac have around 80% of Congress in their pocket. They are spending big this year supporting candidates who are going up against the progressives they can't seem to buy off. Fuckin scandalous.

Quite aside from wether you support Israel or not, that level of influence is fucking sinister. Possibly only matched on this side of the pond by Murdoch
