The other scenario is votes are evenly split and it either destroys the party or they realise they'll never win an election again without him and he's welcomed back to the fold.

I think it puts the party in the hilarious . . . errrr, I mean, terrible position of having to pick. A few of his cock riders who would be nowhere near politics without him will never leave him. Other more senior careerist types will be torn in two. All politicians not named Trump are more interested in what gets them elected and keeps them elected than whether or not Donald Trump is President. As such, no matter who they support, Republicans are screwed. Eventually, because he’s so obviously damaged goods, they’ll have to leave him. But some of their constituents who hate politicians generally and crave a third party to express how much they hate, errrr, party politics might not go along. All Dems have to do is sit back and watch the carnage. And the worse this gets for Trump, the more I think he’ll run 3rd Party after he loses the primary.

De Santis is ahead in Florida because he is governor though, that isnt representative of the halfwits across the country. Trump is still favourite for the nomination. Agree it is now essentially a race for him, delay the court cases long enough that he may become president. I have some faith in this special master, who doesnt seem to be taking any shit. Not much faith mind, but some.
I want it to come down on him for the sake of the wider world. Putin is a maniac. Can you only imagine how bad it will be with his stooge Trump back in charge of the US? Ukraine will only be the start

The dream scenario for the Dems is that Trump is mired in civil and criminal trials and puts himself forward from a weak position (this seems inevitable). RonD Also goes for it in a stronger position and is early favourite. Trump basically starts his run by calling out RonD in endless rants. This would be a gift to the Dems - two idiots trashing each other.

Liz Cheney comes in late and enters the primary process on the last possible day - avoiding the early shit show served up by Trump and RonD. Then you have a 3 way process where Trump is the worst candidate but has the MAGA hardcore base and spends the whole process ripping into the other 2. RonD becomes a kind of middle ground between the shit crazy Trump and respectable Cheney.

The next GOP primary process and full campaign will be a strange one. They have already floated the idea there will be no big televised debates (i'm not sure that works on the primary circuit). If Trump wont turn up to and answer tough questions then something has to give. Either the party steps in and tries to shut down debate and fix the process (very possible - but there are limits to what they can do) or you end up with RonD on stage with Cheney where Ron has to repeat the Trump lies and Cheney can call him a liar and not just a liar but a subservient liar who does not have the courage to stand up to Trump. Trump meanwile not even willing to defend his own lies in person.

The above all hinges on Cheney standing - or another similar candidate. And also the GOP could be just engineering the candidate in the background with no challenge. If there is a challenge it gets very ugly for them.

DeSantis was Governor at the beginning of the the year too, which was my point. A 15 point swing away from Trump in well under a year is a big move.
 
This is why I knew the crackpots on here calling Trump “just another politician” were wrong. It’s not like it was that hard to figure out but I’ve been following his business career since the late 80s, and I know the people he tried to borrow from. I knew exactly who he was decades ago.
