US Politics Thread

Although I entirely agree that Trump's latest anti-Democracy post is abhorrent, the Twitter post above is off base.

The fact is, Trump is in power. He's the leading driver of Republican politics. If you're a Republican political figure, go against Trump and you're out-of-office (with few exceptions).

It’s a dance. If it looks like Trump’s popularity is waning and Desantis is in the ascendency, as some polls are beginning to show, and we end up with a conflict between the two that DeSantis looks like winning, I assure you these shameless cowards will throw Trump overboard. And those who aren’t slavish idiot coattail devotees who’d be serially unemployed without Trump (and will go down with his ship) are praying to get out from under him, I promise — especially establishment Republicans. He is an increasingly heavy anchor. DeSantis is the rescue boat.

I think the genie is out of the bottle and DeSanctomonius isn't hardcore enough for them.

You're trying to say stuff sensible but they're not sensible. They are victims of their own mental weakness and they want the person who will get rid of elections all together so they have Trump and Trumpism forever.

I don't think De Santis is that guy. Maybe I'm wrong but I think after Trump only Cruz is that crazy.

If that’s right then I don’t see how the GOP does anything except get smaller, which means their power shrinks. You’re saying that’s what the GOP wants. “They” don’t want to install Trump as a forever dictator — Trump wants it, some others do, but most don’t — especially not those who have to run against candidates who will use Trump as a stick to beat them with. Trump’s past his apex — if he wasn’t he wouldn’t have lost, the red wave wouldn’t have been a trickle, and the current polls wouldn’t say what they do. I’m trying to be sensible but I’m also looking at facts and while I think MAGAites are crazy it’s not an ideology which is gaining traction — it’s losing traction, and the data says so.

I think Trump is really struggling to stay relevant. He's been shouting about the big lie for long enough now that his cult are getting tired of it. Nothing is moving and they were all fed enough BS to think he'd be back in the WH by now. In short he looks like a loser.

I still think on a primary tomorrow he wins by a good margin. But its not tomorrow. Its not even in a years time. Trump is becoming yesterday's man. And he clearly does not have good people around him fighting back in any coherent way. He's told to stay out of Georgia where a bad candidate is going to lose. Even if they win its no thanks to him. Si he holes up in Maralargo having dinner with deplorables.

He will always have his base but it will get smaller and smaller and Ron DeSantis offers a way out that many GOPers are saying they will take.

Agree with you 100% but you know that conversation that you have with rebellious teens regarding logic and the right way to approach stuff but it just doesn't work??

Well MAGA is essentially those rebelliously racist grown up children that would rather get gratification from QAnon, MAGA than cold hard facts.

And you're right they will continue to get smaller and smaller.. GenZ saved us this time but may not be able to next time since they're still a sizeable force.

It really won't be till 2030 that they start aging out of the voting population that we can actually start to improve things.

And maybe that's all there is to the Republican philosophy all long.. what have they given us that's positive for our country in the last 60 years?

Healthcare? Nope that was Obamacare
Higher minimum wage? Nope that was Obama back in 2009
Better infrastructure? LOL when was the last time the GOP signed onto an infrastructure bill.
Rights for citizens? Nope they're busy trying to take them away.

Can go on and on but their entire philosophy is about going back to the 1800's pre-civil war society where they can boss everyone around who's not white and rule like kings!

The majority is resisting that pull, but the electoral college tips the balance in their favor everytime that unless its a landslide.. they will win the senate and the presidency.

Common sense would say we need to fix antiquated laws and establish majority rule but instead we have what we have where Trump won despite losing by 3 million votes.

And he could win again just like he did before with only 28% of the GOP vote!

But they DIDN’T win the presidency. They DON’T have the Electoral College. They DON’T have the Senate. And if we’re right about the direction the GOP is tailspinning into, it’s LESS likely, not more, that they’ll get closer. If they stick with Trump, that’s a guarantee.

If DeSantis becomes President (or the de facto leader of the GOP) I would guess his platform/rhetoric, while still highly objectionable to me, won’t be “I didn’t lose, I won”; “Tear up the constitution”; “put my relations in control positions”; “enrich myself”; “lie over and over and over and over.” He’ll need NEW voters, not just Trump supporters, if he wants to win.

Trump did not win in 2016 with his loony base alone. It needs a big chunk of rationale normal people who understand exactly what is going on to play along and vote GOP knowing thay are voting for a shit show. As can be seen in the mid terms the loonies really struggling to get the votes. Look at Bobert, that should be safe but its a marginal with her. Walker in Georgia should be winning that. Dr Oz. These loons are not doing it. And maybe Trump won't either. As Fog said above, he is past his apex and we are a long way from decision time.
